No Apology: Syria, Interrupted (Part 2)
In a previous essay, I stated that I found Russian military help to the Syrian State to be an interruption of imperialist state destruction and a net positive. I also said that I recognized there are leftists who disagree with my position as a matter of political judgement, but that--as I would explain in a later post--I disagree vigorously with some of the spurious rhetorical tactics they use. Here's that explanation.

Ship of Fools: What Trump Teaches
Trump showed that all the formidable establishment powers are not as omnipotent as they seemed. If you have a movement and a leadership that fights for the things that will improve the lives of the bottom 90%, things suddenly become possible. But if we spend the next four years in an "opposition" movement managed by the Democrats to elect their neo-liberal in 2020, we will have learned nothing. Series: Trump (2 Articles, 2915 views)

Tom Hayden's Haunting
In 2006, Tom Hayden apologized for being "Israel's Dupe" for selling out to the Israeli lobby in order to run for CA State Assembly in 1982 He called it his "descent into moral ambiguity." He also showed how that lobby gets veto power over candidates down to the level of state and local elections. Said: "Americans must not be timid in speaking up, as I was 25 years ago."

Waiting To Exhale: Hillary, In Sickness And In Health
What's wrong with Hillary? Since her collapse on 9/11, that question has become inescapable. The state of Hillary's health will have the greatest personal and political impact on the people who support her, and who have been insisting that all progressives must vote for her--because she's the only hope for defeating Trump. Strike the Vote
The American voting system lacks the most fundamental condition of electoral democracy--that every citizen has a reasonable certainty his or her vote will be counted as it was cast. At this point, even voting for a third party is no longer a politically relevant gesture. The only effective way to use one's own vote is by withholding it. Prime Directive: Trust the System, Blame the Russians
The NYT article on electronic election concerns gives us a perfect example of the job the establishment media does: ignore the work, and trivialize the well-founded fears, of concerned Americans, and divert attention to the government's villain of the day. Turkey Invades Syria. America Spins The Bottle.
The US-Turkey invasion of Kurdish Syria is an unambiguous act of war and doublethink aggression. Within a week, the US has supported and attacked the same Kurdish groups - one day goading them to attack Syria the next helping Turkey attack them. The frenemy of my frenemy is my frenemy, seems to be the US operating principle in Syria. And it has nothing to do with any "War on ISIS." Series: Syria (8 Articles, 6752 views)

The Obamacare Death Spiral
The insurance companies focus on the real measure of Obamacare's success: whether it can provide sufficient profitability. The main objective of this program is to allow the private health insurance companies to make more profits. If they don't, it fails, in its own real capitalistic (as opposed to its ostensible humanitarian) terms. That day has come.

Taking Liberty: Killing Americans To Protect Israel
Remembering the Liberty is not just an exercise to boil your blood about what happened forty-nine years ago (and reading the links below will do that). Remembering the Liberty is necessary to understand what's happening to us now, and what will happen in the future, if we obey the orders of President Trump or Clinton--either of whom will go all the way with Israel, and to protect it, will sink our ship. Sure, Bernie should fight through the convention, but only if that means mounting floor protests, coordinated with protests in the street, demanding public promises from the nominee and the full convention on a number of key issues. That threat--Affirm the party's progressive stance on x, y, and z, publicly and irrevocably, or we walk out!--is the only power Bernie and his supporters have in the Democratic convention. Bernie Wriggles On The Obama Hook
If FDR's grand historical project was to save capitalism from itself, I fear that Bernie's more modest mission is to save the Democratic Party from itself. If Bernie unequivocally wants the nomination, he should immediately--and certainly if he gets good results in Nevada and South Carolina --join his supporters in demanding that the superdelegates be eliminated or required to follow the popular vote. If Bernie Sanders wins both of these primaries it will be a big thing -- a big media thing, and therefore a big political thing.. Even if he comes in a close second in Iowa, if he wins New Hampshire by double digits, it will be a big thing.
No matter what happens in the primary, there are going to be a lot of erstwhile Democratic voters who will just not pull a lever for Hillary. Series: Bernie Sanders & 2016 Dem Primary (6 Articles, 4036 views), Elections (10 Articles, 9808 views)

Mali Jihadis: The Spawn of Hillary's (And America's) War On Libya

"Good al-Qaeda's" Air Force: The United States Is At War With Syria
The United States just went to war with Syria. America, ISIS, and Syria: We have to bomb the jihadis in order to save them
ISIS is the product of years of American military intervention in Iraq, Libya, and Syria. American military intervention will not solve the jihad problem. It will make it worse. Dipsy Doodle: What "Globalization" Has Wrought
Globalization's big losers are the sectors of the world's population that had decent incomes, a few notches above average -- the kind of income that allowed for homes and vacations, but not limousines and villas. It's not hard to figure who they are; they're the people on the streets in Athens, Madrid, and Paris, in the state capitol in Wisconsin, and those losing their pensions in Detroit.

Dropping a DIME: Max Blumenthal and the Erosion of Liberal Zionism
Zionism, like capitalism, is losing its aura of beneficence and inevitability, as its fangs become harder to hide. Israel is not the Upper West Side overseas. Ball of Confusion: Bradley Manning's Meaning
Thoughts after Manning's sentencing statement. In this statement, he's certainly not the Bradley Manning that we want him to be. It's Not Unusual: The Left-Right (S)Mashup in American Politics

Egypt's Groundhog Day Revolution
I watch the unfolding events in Egypt with a sense of unease, even dread. In the accounts I've read so far from the Egyptian street, I get the sense that, where two years ago there was an elation married with great hope, now there is something more like muted glee accompanied by a sinking feeling.

The Road to Syria: "It all depends on what America says"
It's really quite depressing to watch the utter destruction of another Arab state unfold, framed once again as some kind of project for humanitarianism and/or democracy.
