Defeat or Impeach? The (Il)Logic of Impeachment First, we had Prime Directive A: The Absolute Most Important Thing Ever In The History Of The Universe (or at least The American Republic) Is To Defeat Trump in 2020. Now, there's Prime Directive B: We Must Impeach Trump, even if doing so helps to re-elect him! There's an absolute contradiction in these positions that has to be recognized. There cannot be two "most important" things.

Trump's Syrian See-Saw: From Pullout to Pillage To withdraw, or not to withdraw? That is the question Donald Trump, in his own inimitable way, has answered both ways. He tried to disengage from one "ridiculous endless" war, but neocons played his crass "take the oil" bent like a fiddle.

The Empire Steps Back: Trump Withdraws From Syria - Impeachment Now Possible A series of Donald Trump's decisions, culminating in the decision to withdraw US troops from Syria, has set off a cascade of effects that are dramatically changing the geopolitics of the Middle East and the internal politics of the United States.

Dead Man's Hand: The Impeachment Gambit As Michael Tracey says: "being 'progressive' is now equated in the public mind with advocating that the president be impeached." Let me count the ways this is a supremely bad idea. The Democrats will continue to dangle the shiny possibility of impeachment before their enraged and transfixed constituents--so that they will not turn their attention away from Trump to the structural problems.

Eve of Destruction: Iran Strikes Back Iran considers that it is already at war, and has struck back. And it will do so again-with whatever instruments of force it can muster, in a manner of its choosing, at whatever deadly level of escalation the US uses to try to force Iran to accept its own strangulation.

Avoiding Assange Assange will be prosecuted by US for one reason: to punish him for publishing true, embarrassing information about US crimes and intimidate every journalist in the world from doing so again. This piece deconstructs the twin pillars of diversion for liberals--"the indictment is for hacking not publishing" (favorite of NYT & WaPo) and "the important thing is to extradite him to Sweden for sex charges" (current favorite in UK).

Investigation Nation: Mueller, Russiagate, and Fake Politics Russiagate/Mueller Investigation was a great success--it increased Russophobia, corralled Dem base & fenced out left--& will continue to be a great success. There will be endless summaries & interpretations, and arguments about the interpretations based on endless speculation.

The Siege of Venezuela and The Travails of Empire The United States government's new offensive against Venezuela is an act of naked imperialism. The United States is attempting to seize control of another sovereign nation, Venezuela. Having no speck of standing within Venezuela or in international law, the U.S. is resorting to regime change by edict.

For What It's Worth: The Yellow Vests and the Left The Yellow Vest movement is a widespread working-class revolt against economic injustice and the neo-liberal state. Exactly what the left should embrace.

"Taxpayer Money" Threatens Medicare-for-All (And Every Other Social Program) Leftists need to stop talking about "taxpayer money." It perpetuates an ideology of how money and public financing work that is not only false, but profoundly reactionary and politically damaging--that is designed to, and will, impede achieving the most basic progressive goals.

Be Careful What You Ask For: Wasting Time with Manafort, Cohen, and Russiagate Will Democrats push for impeachment? They know it's unlikely to succeed. They know the can of worms they are opening with charges that could be levied against most rich politicians. And, most importantly, they know the fight they will have to wage will be intensely divisive and will deeply undermine confidence in the political system, however it ends up.

Fighting Fake Stories: The New Yorker, Israel and Obama In any possible reading of this article, it's a damning indictment of the liberal ideology embodied by Obama Democrats and/or by an iconic media outlet of highbrow culture. In any possible reading, someone's a political fool

Sacrificing Gaza: The Great March of Zionist Hypocrisy The Great March of Return is a startling, powerful expression of Palestinian identity and resistance. Thousands of Palestinians have come out, bravely and unapologetically, to say: "We refuse to remain invisible. We reject any attempt to assign us to the discard pile of history. We will exercise our fundamental right to go home."

Honoring Robert Parry Robert Parry's death is a profound loss to our country as a political and intellectual community. It's a shame that most Americans don't know that--and, indeed, don't even know who Robert Parry is. That ignorance is a sign of how impoverished our political and intellectual community has already become.

Behind the Money Curtain: A Left Take on Taxes, Spending, and Modern Monetary Theory The first reason leftists should adopt MMT is the same reason some conservatives do--because it's true, and has been known to be for a long time. And a strong left movement can only be built on a correct economic analysis. Money is a powerful tool/weapon in the hands of our class enemy. We better know how it works.

Sticks and Stones: Free Speech And Punching Politics The question is: In our country today, is it acceptable, even necessary, to deny right-wing, characterizable-as-"fascist," political opponents the right to express their views in public, with whatever means necessary, whether that be legal censorship or preemptive physical force?

Zionism In The Light of Jerusalem Donald Trump's official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is an embarrassment. A salutary embarrassment. It's a clumsy, all-too-obvious unmasking of decades of bipartisan U.S. policy whose contempt for Palestinians has been cloaked with a smile and a handshake.

Fool Me Twice: Trojan Horse Democrats Pile Into the House of Single-Payer It's great the so many senators co-sponsored Bernie's single-payer bill. But it does not mean that most, or any, of those Democratic senators actually support single-payer. Most of those Democrats have signed on because they felt politically forced to. But many of them do not support single-payer, have no intention of actually working to make it happen, and will, in fact, do their best to undermine and prevent it

California Scheming: Single-Payer Betrayed By The Democrats Again Nothing better illustrates the political bankruptcy of the Democratic Party--for all progressive intents and purposes--than California State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon's announcement on Friday afternoon that he was going to put a "hold" on the single-payer health care bill (SB 562) for the state, effectively killing its passage for at least the year.
