Vegan choices are also making their way into school lunch programs! Leave it to Los Angeles to head toward instituting a pilot vegan school lunch program, noting "the World Health Organization, Harvard Medical School, the Physicians Committee and several other national and international health-committees have determined consuming meat and dairy increases the risk for cancer, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. In contrast, plant-based diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate and beneficial for the prevention of heart disease, obesity, cancer and diabetes."
The Los Angeles Unified School District is a leader in making school lunches healthier -- when they banned antibiotics and hormones in poultry several years ago, the rest of the county was not far behind.
Most people have far more power in their own hands to craft a life of health and vibrancy than they believe. Maybe that is part of the silver lining of our current political landscape, desolate though it may appear -- perhaps we are being encouraged to take our own, innate power back in many arenas.
We've handed our personal power over to the government, to the medical industry, and to pharmaceutical companies for too long. And the good news is that our most effective solutions may be easier, cheaper and more delicious than what we've accepted as the norm. We can make tasty choices that empower our own health and move away from Big Pharma and Big Farms, while they contribute to the good of the environment.
Bon appetite!
