The author of this story says, "Ironically, I don't blame the gunmakers" for the continuing parade of mass shootings, largely by people not old enough, like Chumley, or barely legally old enough, like Gendron and Ramos, to possess the weapons they use. He goes to some length to document the gunmaker (with 600,000 followers!) Daniel Defense, which made the 2000-plus dollar AR-15 variant used by the killer in Uvalde, and its actions following the use of its product by Ramos.

It should be obvious to any rational human being that selling people consumer goods that kill should be handled in a radically different way than selling them food to nourish them, or baseball game tickets, to entertain them, or cars, to transport AND entertain them.

But as the author laments, while there are long-established regulations prohibiting sales of alcohol and tobacco (two objects to which the scientific and polotical community have attributed significant risk), the same kid who can't take a legal drink for another three years (though at 17 s/he can enlist in the military, one of the outcomes for which the gun-promoters and sellers are priming youths) can buy a semi-automatic high-capacity-magazine rifle, wiith no questions asked, and apparently no waiting period between purchase and possession.

"Here ya go, kid, have fun!"

My name is William Perkins Homans the third, but probably more people know me as the bluesman (and artist) Watermelon Slim.

I've been in the fight against war, fascism, injustice and inhumanity for 47 years. I was at MayDay, 1971, (more...)
