The climate conference in Katowice, Poland, provides focus for all citizens around the globe who are imbued with decency and sense of concern and responsibility for the harm to the planet our collective behavior has incurred. I appreciate all these concerned souls. However, slowly reducing the influence of carbon-based emissions will still leave the planet in her death throes.
Addressing climate will leave unchanged the shocking loss of species in the world's oceans and not alter the terrible reality that as these species die their loss is infilled with plastic trash. Addressing climate will not restore oxygen-producing rain forests and coniferous forests. Our depleted water tables and the poisoning of our water will be unchanged and likely become worse. In general, all of the symptoms of a dying planet will persist.
This planet, our planet, is dying from excessive exploitation of her land and seas and pollution of her air and water. Our sheer numbers are decimating vast numbers of species--insect and amphibian populations have collapsed and birds are starving. The presence and interrelationship of plants and animals are essential for life to persist on this planet. This planet is dying from the billions of tiny wounds we each inflict on her. Our very presence in our vast billions has overwhelmed the planet and her ecosystems.
We can solve this existential crisis simply and easily without asking the corporate world and ruling elite or our corrupt weak politicians for permission. To reverse the harmful effects of excessive human population all we need do is commit to one child per family or woman until we halve our population burden on mother earth. This necessary global movement will be painless and voluntary. Less than 100% compliance will not meaningfully change the ultimate positive outcome--a planet being restored to health. This is painless, gradual, and truly the only effective means to restore the planet to viability; there is no other path to avoid human influence destroying the life force of planet earth.
This is not a drastic, disruptive change in behavior. The positive effects take place slowly and inevitably. We have a lot of time to think about this and make decisions that will guide us as we adjust to fewer humans milling about on the earth. We can easily do this, no coercion, rather encouragement and of, course, empowerment of women and widespread availability of birth control at no cost.
We need all well-intentioned persons among us to help create a movement founded on the life-sustaining truth encompassed in our mission statement: 'one child will save the planet'. This statement needs be spread across facebook and twitter and broadly and generally everywhere you can think to help with this planet-saving modest shift in consciousness. This is not someone else's responsibility--it is ours.
