How the News Actually Makes it Possible for Us to Avoid Reality

you are part of a collective drama

But this is vicarious significance, not real significance.

It is a way of feeling involved while remaining fundamentally passive. In that sense, news is not just a distraction -- it is a simulation of agency.

And simulations are powerful precisely because they satisfy the appetite without nourishing it.

4. The news as a machine for managing anxiety

Paradoxically, the constant stream of crises can make the world feel more dangerous while simultaneously making the individual feel less responsible.

It creates a psychological posture of:

"Everything is terrible, but none of it is my fault and none of it is within my reach."

This is a strangely comforting position. It absolves. It anesthetizes. It keeps the individual from confronting the actual sources of meaning and responsibility in their own life.

In that sense, news is not just avoidance -- it is organized avoidance.

5. Conscious or unconscious?

This is the interesting part.

Consciously? Most journalists would deny it. They believe they are revealing reality, not obscuring it.

Unconsciously? Absolutely. The structure of the industry -- speed, novelty, emotional engagement, narrative coherence, audience retention -- requires the creation of a mediated world that is more gripping than the real one.

And once you build a machine that rewards distraction, the machine will produce distraction whether anyone intends it or not.
