Leadership requires those adjectives that the Democrats in D.C. scurry away from: courage, boldness, conviction. There is no Wizard of Oz. If the Dems want to speak with conviction and fearlessnes, they will have to summon the courage themselves -- and there's been little indication that they have the inherent capacity to do so.

The errant policy followed by both the Bush and Obama administrations has led us into a situation where we will be just where we were before the invasion of Afghanistan began. This is a failure of such stunning proportion that it would be a farce were it not so deadly, costly, and harmful to the American nation and what is needed to move us forward domestically.

Nothing has changed to improve our security in Afghanistan or Pakistan except that the area is even more volatile now. Nothing has changed except that a lot of contractors got rich, a lot of military higher ups got promoted, and a lot of politicians got to pretend they were Wyatt Earp.

President Obama has turned out to be perhaps the last President with the opportunity to cut us free from the past. And, instead, he holds onto that anchor is if it were a life jacket as it pulls us down, leaving us to look longingly at what might save us from afar. The promise of an evolving and sustainable America is within our reach, but thus far not within Obama's grasp.
