California Senator Kamala Harris won the Democratic presidential debate last night. It was not a close contest. She will win every debate she enters during this election cycle. If she becomes the nominee, she will win every debate with Trump.

Night two of the debates was just as vapid and ridiculous as night one. Candidates interrupted and talked over each other a lot, questions about foreign policy were avoided like the plague to prevent NBC viewers from thinking critically about the mechanics of empire, and Eric Swalwell kept talking despite everyone in the universe desperately wanting him not to. Buttigieg and Gillibrand did alright, Bernie played the same note he's been playing for decades, and everyone was reminded how bad Joe Biden is at talking and thinking.

Biden has been treated kindly by polls and regarded as a "frontrunner" in this race exclusively because for the last decade he hasn't had to do anything other than be associated with Barack Obama. Now that he's had to step out of that insulated role and interact with reality again, everyone's seeing the same old garbage right-wing Democrat who sucks at making himself look appealing just as badly as he did in his last two presidential campaigns. By the end of the night, even Michael Bennet was slapping him around.

The moment everyone's talking about was when Harris created a space for herself to attack Biden on his citing his collaboration with segregationists as an example of his ability to reach across the aisle and "get things done." Harris had not been called upon to speak, and once given the go-ahead by moderator Rachel Maddow after interjecting went way beyond the 30 seconds she'd been allotted in tearing Biden apart. She skillfully took control of the stage and engineered the entire space for the confrontation by sheer dominance of personality, and Biden had no answer for it.

That's the moment everyone's talking about. But Harris had already been owning the debate prior to that.

The goal of a political debate is to make yourself look appealing and electable to your audience. You can do that by having a very good platform, or you can do it with charisma and oratory skills. It turns out that Kamala Harris is really, really good at doing the latter. She made frequent and effective appeals to emotion, she built to applause lines far more skillfully than anyone else on the stage, she kept her voice unwavering and without stammer, she made herself look like a leader by admonishing the other candidates to stop talking over each other, and she hit all the right progressive notes you're supposed to hit in such a debate.

Unlike night one of the debates, night two had a clear, dominant winner. If you were a casual follower of US politics and didn't have a favorite coming into the debate, you went away feeling that Harris was the best.

This wasn't a fluke. Harris has been cultivating her debate skills for decades, first in the Howard University debate team where she is said to have "thrived," then as a prosecutor, then as a politician, and she'll be able to replicate the same caliber of performance in all subsequent debates. There's more to getting elected than debate skills, but it matters, and in this area no one will be able to touch her.

Harris won the debate despite fully exposing herself for the corporate imperialist she is in the midst of that very debate. While answering a question about climate change she took the opportunity to attack Trump on foreign policy, not for his insane and dangerous hawkishness but for not being hawkish enough, on both North Korea and Russia.

"You asked what is the greatest national-security threat to the United States. It's Donald Trump," Harris said. "You want to talk about North Korea, a real threat in terms of its nuclear arsenal. But what does he do? He embraces Kim Jong Un, a dictator, for the sake of a photo op. Putin. You want to talk about Russia? He takes the word of the Russian president over the word of the American intelligence community when it comes to a threat to our democracy and our elections."

Harris is everything the US empire's unelected power establishment wants in a politician: charismatic, commanding, and completely unprincipled. In that sense she's like Obama, only better.

Harris was one of the 2020 presidential hopefuls who came under fire at the beginning of the year when it was reported that she'd been reaching out to Wall Street executives to find out if they'd support her campaign. Executives named in the report include billionaire Blackstone CEO Jonathan Gray, 32 Advisors' Robert Wolf, and Centerbridge Partners founder Mark Gallogly. It was reported two entire years ago that Harris was already courting top Hillary Clinton donors and organizers in the Hamptons. She hasn't been in politics very long, but her campaign contributions as a senator have come from numerous plutocratic institutions.

Both Oprah Winfrey and Tulsi Gabbard spoke favorably about Joe Biden, with intelligent and viable responses, about one paragraph each. But I'll be damned if I can find them now on Advanced or Regular Google Search, DuckDuckGo, or Ecosia.

For what it's worth department, given that I can't find what I read within the last week... They weren't hailing for Joe, nor am I, just saying the barrage of insanity against him was typical and far off in the fairway, regarding things that matter.

Biden is an old school imperial neoliberal warmonger. Pursuing such policies has brought us to where we are. To be clear.

However, forced busing was not only controversial with "white" folks, but "black" neighborhoods were against sending their children cross town away from their local schools. Forced busing to desegregate, while well intended, was ended and replaced with magnet schools (which are not providing racial balance) and charter schools (which were not meant to be an alternative when they started, nor privatized as they now are).

Education is a mess in this country like most else. How can you concentrate on human rights when our government is in perpetual war, blowing children up.

My point is dredging up Biden's record on busing was to give Harris's weak campaign a boost (hear she's selling t-shirts with a picture of her as a little girl...speaks volumes). Harris's record is on par with Biden regarding the crime bill prosecution of mostly poor people of color.

Hailing from California, I'd happily give you 5 thumbs-up for your comment.

Kamala Harris is a dangerous choice, IMO.

Not denying this. Merely saying it is a waste of whatever time is left to harp on it. Sorry I can't find the paragraphs referenced. Your summary is succinct and sufficient, imo.

I'm not sure what bugs me about Harris, the melodrama perhaps. I like Tulsi Gabbard, I like Pete Buttegieg. I want them all to pool their resources and clobber the Right with Team Play. But those two have a calm, articulate approach that tells me they can live without the win. In the end the appeal rests with whom you'd like to have the proverbial beer. It's in the voice, in the word choice, in the erasure of ego. Shrill and whiny don't hack it. If I were President: The first thing I'd do is get those babies out of prison on the border and back with their families. Then I'd pardon Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning and what's his name exiled in Russia. That won't cost a dime. Then I'd cut the military budget by 75% and bring every soldier home and aim them at the crumbling infrastructure before another bridge falls down. Then I'd institute a clean up force called Nail'em and Jail'em, and end POLLUTION here and abroad. If they confess and stop, we can help them clean up. I'd purchase Baja California from Mexico and invite the Palestinians to come live there. As a citizen, I will not send another dime to Washington until Trump is gone. Please join me, they can't jail us all.

I believe what bugs you about Harris is your gut is telling you she's a phony. What comes from her mouth isn't what comes from the heart. Then you have the screamer, Warren. Just her screeching voice is grating enough, but what comes from her mouth is nothing more than what she thinks people want to hear. There is little conviction behind those words as she proved in 2016 when she endorsed Clinton who's political views were a complete opposite of Warren's.

I think what separates Tulsi from the rest of the candidates is integrity. I firmly believe she is not running for her personal quest of being President, but is doing so to attempt to give "hope" back to the people. I fear the people do not realize how near we are to losing that if it isn't already past that point.

Sounds like you want someone who on the world stage will comport themselves as something other than a bully who embraces full spectrum dominance. Yes get those babies out of prison and STOP killing them through bombs and sanctions IMMEDIATELY. Shut down the global bases, and negotiate end to nuclear threats and negotiate with major polluting countries and fossil producers a global effort to rein in climate destruction.

I'm a Gabbard supporter for the reasons you articulated. I must say that while I've not been a Mayor Pete supporter he showed more depth, composure and focus on the debate stage than the others on Thursday. We'll see.

I watched and listened to Harris during the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings. I thought she is very smart, presents herself very well, and knew how to make her points. Before that, I did not know anything about Harris. But, since the start of her campaign, I have come to understand how she operates. Yes, she can talk a good talk and can come across as likable, but she is no more than a crafty politician; a crafty politician like all the others.

Beware of Harris, she is but little more than a shyster that appears to be electable. But simply being elected only puts her in the same position as all the other politicians we elect. She would join the group that has not passed any real significant legislation of the people, by the people, and for the people for I don't know how long.

The debate games have finally begun! Only 494(!) days left until the election!

Absolutely, she is NObama v2.0, for sure. She's already backtracked on her Medicare for All position during the debate claiming she misheard the question.

As an added bonus for the DNC, she's two 'minorities' in one.

Kamala Harris will be much harder to get rid of than beer spots on leather. :)

She is Gorilla Glue, and worse, -- young enough to make a few passes at brass ring. Man, do we ever need an overhaul around here.

To avoid an ulcer, laugh at them. In your head and in your heart, laugh at the clowns sloshing around in their sense of importance. YES, the results of their ugliness are real and painful AND widespread. It's a pathetic time for decent people.

Still, in the bigger picture, these deadpan-to-slapstick creeps are quite comedic. (Let's imagine Harris with a Bolton caterpillar on her upper lip)

Well, I feel better now. How 'bout choo?

Bless you. For the Choo' I mean.

I don't know Janet. A bolton Caterpillar on Kamala's upper lip? That strikes me as kind of weird and a possible cause of nightmares. But I get your point, I think.

I would bet you have thought of this too. WHY! DOES ANYONE RUN FOR CONGRESS OR FOR THE SENATE OR FOR THE PRESIDENCY?>??

If they have any wits about them they surely must know they ain't going to make any difference. Maybe they know there is money in there somewhere. Maybe they just want to be bought and paid for like all the others. Huh, I wonder if that is it. Tomorrow I will check if either -- there are two, aren't there? -- senator in this state is up for reelection and if so, go down and put in my application. Who knows, maybe I could become a bought and paid for -- I am not cheap -- senator. If that happens, I will take you and Leslie out for a beer. Don't wear your new shoes...

Seriously, I am pretty sure you and Leslie are friends and I think it would be fun to meet you two. It would be a nice change to have someone I could actually talk to about OEN type stuff.

Take care. :)

Romance and Politics.

The thicker our still wet-behind-the-ears national heritage becomes, the more references to past 'heroes', the more we distill the notion of the Leadership, the more of a cliche it becomes. What indeed do those brave enough to give up real lives to set themselves up for inquiry and assassination, proverbial or otherwise, have in mind?

When women started joining the profession, I wondered why, because in the end politics seems to me the dullest, most exhausting thing one could elect to do. Some of the black women have done the most admirable job of keeping their heads above water and projecting a genuinely lofty presence. Like Helen Gurly Brown and Maxine Waters. I really like Stacy Abrams too. She's a class act in my book. She has that kind of inalienable power that Nature gives some of us without question; the kind that invites the envy of the wicked; the kind that gets us shot.

This pretty much sums her up perfectly. She's just like NObama, but with much more balls to do all the wrong things.

The 99% are so freaking screwed in this country.

Eight years of NObama. Four years of trump, hopefully. And at least four years of another Republicrat.

People either have it or they don't. It's structural, intellectual. Humor, too is a part of the act. I have wondered if the thing that's missing in the Cabinet I keep raving about isn't something akin to the 'court jester'; a National Comic who could shake the others loose from wallowing in the soul-rusting quagmire of narcissism that engulfs the present Impostor in Chief and keep their eyes on the ball that is true progress, whatever the hell that is.

So what distinguishes any politician from being nothing more than a local phenomenon? Wanting to be remembered for the very sake of being remembered or a fixation on problems so intriguing that one forgets self entirely and remains in the history books simply because they cannot separate themselves from the effort of solving them? The "I have a dream" kind of guy.

Since I believe neither in Nations nor races-- both what I call "ephemeral realms"--mutable states that reflect timely geographic aggregations of tribes and practical affiliations; but cling to the idea that our species has been chosen as the default protector of the only home we have-- our planet-- from the only enemy we ever really had-- a fiery rock determined to blast us to Kingdom Come-- it all seems quite subjective; a screen show we compulsively recreate in Hollywood style to distract ourselves from our own mortality and that of Life itself. In other words, a Dream indeed.
