Humanity, in the grips of addiction and on a path to destruction, requires an intervention. To be awake means to be active in this intervention. In fact, we need to learn to "be the change that makes the change"- becoming activists within our own arena of influence.
In the depths of our hearts, we know the way home on the planet we share. We can remember that humans are members of one species and are energetically connected. And we can actualize this remembrance by collaboratively working together with joy and dedication.
We need to imagine a positive, nourishing future for the Earth and move toward it step by step - making it a reality. We are living in a crucial moment of choice: we are called to leave old story and create a new one. We require a clear strategic vision which knows what we do - and do not - want. We can choose to realize that we are not here to exploit the Biosphere, but to serve it.
Actions we can take: reading; discussion with individuals or study groups (and especially gaining an understanding of "far-from-equilibrium-systems," in which very small changes can have disproportionately large effects); learning to "listen deeply," with a silent, attentive mind; thoughtful contemplation; moving out of a dominance orientation in all areas of our lives, including personal relationships (moving from an "I-It" to an "I-Thou" consciousness); political activism (whether global or local); and meditation or other spiritual practices which move our energy from the power center (chakra) to the heart and intuitive centers - opening the spaces of compassion, love, and insight.
Above all, what is required is that we discover "nobility of soul"- the nobility of the sacred warrior, willing to fight peacefully for a new world, regardless of the outcome.
Joanna Macy's Active Hope and Duane Elgin's Choosing Earth have excellent suggestions re- how to meet this crisis positively and effectively.
Given the massive degree of change that is called for, each of us will need to become willing to endure the turbulence of moving beyond our comfort zones, habits, and personal paradigms.
