Things will never be the same. We cannot simply go back to the old ways, which incidentally got us into the problem in the first place, we must build a better structure that actually serves democracy better and deals with human life more respectfully.
The goal is not to restore the past. The goal is to create a democracy capable of meeting the realities of the future.
Like rebuilding a library that has been a depository of culture, knowledge and history, once it has been burned and much of its content destroyed, it becomes a very difficult and time consuming task. Rebuilding democratic institutions will be neither quick nor easy. It will require patience, persistence, and sustained citizen involvement. But if we understand the problem clearly and remain committed to the task, the rebuilding can begin.
The first responsibility of citizens is not to defend any particular political party or leader. It is to defend the democratic process itself. If free and fair elections cannot be maintained, the peaceful means by which citizens hold government accountable begin to disappear. Protecting that process may be the most important civic responsibility of all.
