The question remains what happened to General Austin's deployment of elite trained "well-vetted moderate freedom fighters" know as Division 30? Obama had feared that they would be attacked by Assad's forces. It turns out that they were killed or captured by al-Qaeda in Syria (here). All of their U.S. supplied weapons and equipment fell into the hands of extremists.
Division 30 is a tragic metaphor of the insanity of trying to identify, train and arm "well-vetted moderates" to defeat both the Islamic State and Bashar al-Assad at the same time. The so-called moderates keep losing and their U.S. supplied weapons and military equipment keep falling into the hands of extremists. The Gulf States keep supplying the Sunni extremists.
Now Russia's Vladimir Putin has once again offered Obama a political option out of his quagmire in Syria. It requires keeping Assad on long enough to defeat the rebel extremists, stabilize Syria, relieve the humanitarian crisis, and form a transitional government. Does Obama have any other sane choice?
