Consciousness as a Field
Dr. Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 90 scientific papers, 9 books, and the co-author of 6 books. His books have been published in 28 languages. He was among the top 100 Global Thought Leaders in 2013, as ranked by the Duttweiller Institute - Zurich, Switzerland's leading think tank.
Using gravitational and electromagnetic fields as examples, he defines "fields" as non-material regions of influence. It is clear that there are many more fields that we cannot detect with our senses, such as vibratory patterns including radio and television waves.
It is possible to picture consciousness as a field phenomenon.
According to Sheldrake, "these entities [fields] are more fundamental than matter. Fields cannot be explained in terms of matter; rather matter is explained in terms of energy within fields."
We usually picture change in terms of people and events, objects and forces. We ask, "who did what to make a change occur?" However, from an alternative point of view, it can be said that change is "field-generated." Forms distill out of fields.
It is not unusual for parents to know when a child is in danger, even if the child is miles away.
