The prevailing view of socialism held by most Americans today is that of the police terror, frame-ups, mass murders and the gulags under Stalin without providing any historical context thereby conflating "socialism" with Stalin giving corporate controlled media the opportunity to generate the myth of "democracy" vs "dictatorship" while the truth is that genuine socialism and genuine democracy are inseparable and remains to be spoken while our continuing attachment to ignorance provides fertile ground for the coming fascism that V. I. Lenin stated would be the final stage of capitalism.
In 1944 Henry Wallace, FDR's VP and a real democrat, stated that fascism was a worldwide disease and fascism's "greatest threat will come to the United Sates after the war." Wallace described 2020 America when he said fascists would seize political power and the power of the market to "keep the common man in eternal subjection."
Also in 1944 during the Democratic Convention conservative democrats and moderates deemed Wallace to be "too far left" and replaced him with Harry Truman. At the end of the day the importance of the 2020 elections is not about preserving our imaginary democracy rather it is about recognizing the only path to democracy is socialism and Sanders would be at best a first step in that direction unless the Democrat establishment repeats history. Meanwhile today's Republican Party and its true believers continues to follow their pied piper into the abyss that is fascism.
