On this day Frederick Douglass died and 125 years later this is his message from beyond the grave to a 2020 Amerika where the rule of law has been replaced by a Dear Leader, aided and abetted by sycophants posing as public servants and worshipped by a dangerous cult who believe god is on their side and trump is their christian fascist prophet to whom they owe their allegiance.
"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress."
Once upon a time we claimed the greatness of a political system in which our elections resulted in a peaceful transfer of power. That may be another "former norm" because we should anticipate Dear Leader will not cede defeat nor should we expect the democrat party to challenge the legitimacy of another election rigged by gerrymandering, state voter ID laws, voter suppression, Citizens United, Shelby County v Holder, the electoral college and now foreign interference.
Our current political system is monopolized by two pro crony capitalist political parties one of which is criminal while the other is complicit and both have divided the public to promote and protect a status quo remains where the few continue to profit at the expense of the many creating a future which will continue to destroy the American dream and test the endurance of those it oppresses begging the question posed by Langston Hughes "What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun?... Or does it explode?"
