As one who has marched, and spoken, and been repeatedly arrested in non-violent civil disobedience, in Washington, DC, I gotta say this: I would rather abide by the lawnorder and justice the police and National Guardsmen were attempting to preserve than that of those in the mob who would have hurt, show-tried, maybe killed, congresspeople of both parties if they had been completely successful in their invasion and penetrated to the Chamber itself.
I took the oath to defend my country from enemies foreign and domestic very seriously, and still do, Vietnam Veterans Against the War Life Member though I may be. Though I could never have been a cop, had I been one of those reduced to standing, with a pistol in my hand, on the other side of the door to the chamber the rioters were trying to break down, I would have known my duty if they had succeeded.
