To be clear, any discussion about dereliction of duty on Trump's part must also take into account that failure to take measures to prevent the pompous, semi-sentient former president from ever regaining control the Oval Office would be tantamount to providing logistical support to any global adversary hell-bent on exacerbating America's political and cultural divide. Truth be told, the White House should never again become home to a person so unable to evoke even a trace of swagger-less splendor.

As of late July, there was no definitive statement from the Department of Justice that a criminal indictment of Trump himself is either imminent or under consideration. However Attorney General Merrick Garland has made it clear that no one is off limits.

"We intend to hold (accountable) anyone who was criminally responsible for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another," Garland vowed.

Time will tell. But with that caveat by Garland in mind, should Trump at some point find himself looking for an easy way to avoid prison, an insanity plea could turn out to be a slam dunk for his defense team.
