                                   PERPLEXED
Fair enough.  Who knows what tomorrow will bring?  For now,
            you're my secret muse.

                                   PATRON
            You're silly.

                                   PERPLEXED
Absolutely.  But I can get serious too.

                                   PATRON
                          (getting up to leave)
We know that.  Bring in a print-out of any work, I'll read it
and tell you what I think.

                                   PERPLEXED
            Excellent.  You gotta go?

                                   PATRON
            Yeah.

                                   PERPLEXED
            Well--good chattin' with ya.

                                   PATRON
            You too.

                                   PERPLEXED
            See ya.

                                   PATRON
            Bye.

                                   (Patron exits, perplexed opens NOTEBOOK
                                   to jot down thoughts.)

(A few beats of silence before FORLORN
                                   puts down newspaper.)

                                   FORLORN
Can I shamelessly indulge myself?  I'm feeling a little punch
drunk as a member of the battered Democratic base.  I'm no
saint.  I have enemies and negative feelings, and all.  It's
nothing to be proud of, but I won't deny it.  I'm human.

                                   PERPLEXED
                          (to the audience)
Oh no.  Oh god.  I said I wouldn't do it.  I should get up
and leave.  No more politics.  I'm not talking politics!

                                   FORLORN (CONT'D)
Now politically, as a human being alive on planet Earth--a
sapient being with a mind and a conscience, and an average
sense of awareness--I do indeed have enemies.  Foes.

                                   HAPPY
Of course, we all do.  How can we not?
