These days I'd call these enemies out as crooks and thieves
and murderers.
HAPPY
There're far more colorful epithets to throw at 'em.
(Perplexed sets his notebook aside and
rubs his face as if he's about to
faint.)
FORLORN
I mean I'm completely over the notion that I hate Republicans
or I hate Democrats or Greens or stupid bloggers or
particular media personalities--
I have contempt for all sorts of people, join the club.
FORLORN
There are so many operatives who should be in jail.
HAPPY
Common criminals, the government's currently crawling with
them. Not pure evil or nefarious geniuses--just common
criminals.
FORLORN
I mean, pretty it up all you want with slogans and quotes
from the past, but very simply put, I'm a member of the
Democratic base. My values haven't changed since I was a
little girl, so my view shows me we have in the highest
positions of power, a group of common criminals.
HAPPY
And not even fancy ones.
FORLORN
Not at all.
HAPPY
You'd think we could get a little entertainment out of the
mess.
FORLORN
And I'm not claiming that, as a member of the Democratic
base, my values are somehow superior. I don't think they
are. But at least they get the job done when it comes to
ripping away media distractions, and seeing who crooks are
and focusing on the problem.
HAPPY
(making motions to an imaginary
notebook)
Torch? Check. Pitchfork? Check.
FORLORN
(gesturing towards newspaper)
Right! I mean how much more of this do we have to put up
with?!
PERPLEXED
Excuse me. I don't mean to barge in, but to be honest the
sentiment is insulting.
FORLORN
What sentiment? That we're tired of reading about common
criminals in public office?
