What is the greatest commandment, the essence of the Bible? "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind, and soul, and thy neighbor as thyself." Compassion is the crucial element found in every major world religion.
Even if we are an atheist or agnostic, we can love the true, inherent nature in everyone, including ourselves--in each moment, with every breath.
And if we love all and exclude none, we will remove the social and political barriers that prevent others from realizing their fullest potential--not just in our own country, but throughout the world.
We live, breathe, and have our being within a global ecosystem. Our economic choices and our political decisions must be sustainable: We must have equal compassion for the people of future generations, even seven generations from now, so that the people who live here when we are gone will consider our teachings and practices as a model.
