There are top-down religions and bottom up religions and ways of thinking about matters of faith and god.

by ancientartpodcast.org

Top down religions tend to tell people what to do, how to iive, using a god figure as ultimate authority, often with a high priest, pope, rabbi, head mullah, etc. as the ultimate authority. Most put their religion above all others and may have evangelism and conversion as a value-- God wants EVERYONE to believe this religion.
Bottom up religions tend to come from the earth-- authority figures are humble, aim to empower people, help them find ways to connect and synergize with nature.
There are some religions that are a mix of both. For example, some evangelical churches encourage grassroots prayer groups.
Some religions, perhaps most, allow human weakness-- particularly the urge to power, greed, lust-- to corrupt some of the original teachings of the founders.
I've written this hoping that commenters will flesh out specific examples of different top-down and bottom-up religions and practices.
