quotations on awakening at the end of this article

My other half sent me a $25 credit I can use to loan someone as part of a microfinancing approach (a birthday present.) This is through kiva.org an incredible manifestation of the idea that Muhammad Yunus started.

As I signed up as a site member, the form asked me for my occupation. In the past, I've answered with a number of responses-- executive or entrepreneur or inventor for my small business futurehealth.org, counselor, from when I worked in the mental health field, or biofeedback practitioner, from when I used to work in that field as a practitioner, writer when I've functioned as a freelancer in the past or editor or journalist, more recently.

But today, I thought about what I've been across many of those "occupations, and I typed in "Awakener" because I realized that through most of my life, my work has been aimed at waking people up.

It feels so good to have founded a community that is filled with fellow people who share the same occupation.

Now, the dictionary definition of awakener as someone who awakens. That is not what I am talking about. Well, actually, my concept of the occupation of awakener is one in which we do the work that produces the dictionary definition-- people who wake up.

Do you volunteer for an NGO, non-profit, grass roots politics? Do you write about issues that people need to know about? Are you an educator, therapist, marketer, minister or coach? Try it on for size. See if or how it changes your approach to what you do and how you see yourself. It's just started to do its work on me.

I read this to my brother-in-law. He commented that it's not an occupation you'll see listed-- that I'll have to check off other.

Yet there are literally millions of people-- many millions, maybe billions-- who are on the awakener's path.

Seven years ago, I had an insight and realized that STORY is the biggest business in the world, except perhaps, for transportation and the energy sources involved, an that the world of story involvies movies, books, newspapers, television, cable, magazines, lawyers, politicians, ministers, corporate consultants, marketers, knowledge manager, therapists, scientists-- all creating narratives-- as well as storytellers, screenwriters, novelists, mythologists, linguists, philosophers, critics and poets.

I discovered, through conversations with leaders in those fields, that there had never been a conference that brought together people from all these fields. So I organized the first one and it was one of those blind wise men and the elephant moments, where people discovered they were all looking at different parts and aspects of story.

Blind Wise Men and Elephant Images by Rob Kall

My point is that sometimes we humans do some things, a real lot of us do them and we don't see, don't realize that there are millions of us doing the same thing and finally we do wake up. WAKE UP. And usually someone helps us to wake up. And that's what this is about. If the US and the world are to survive the literal war against humanity that corporatism is perpetrating in the name of profits, we must wake up-- first ourselves and then those around us.

In his visionary book, Blessed Unrest, Paul Hawkens describes how there are hundreds of thousands of people engaging in a bottom-up revolution that IS waking huge masses of people up.

There are millions of bloggers who are speaking truth to power, waking people up. Arianna Huffington, Markos Moulitsas Zuniga (Dailykos) Josh Marshall (talkingpointsmemo.com) are all opening up venues where people who practice the occupation of awakener can do their good work. And there are all those professions and lines of work I listed above.

It is never too late

Mark it is never too late.  I was going to say, 'while we still breathe',  but the effects of our lives, things that we've said and thought and done, continue long after we have gone.  In the final instance, that may be all that matters, really - the effects our lives have had.

And to Rob, I hope you have a wonderful year ahead - one of the very best.

Politically, I lean Libertarian. When discussing issues, I will slam Dems and/or Republicans.

Now, when it comes to really irritating me, just make an unfounded charge; I will clobber whomever makes the charge if there are no facts to back it up! Another version of this is when I see something that is just plainly silly/ridiculous.

An example could be something stated which could be very easily disproved. Another example, and I see this frequently: Rather than...

My Occupation: Re-Director to REALITY

When the discussion turns from fact to fiction, I RE-DIRECT people to the facts, and I re-direct people to the reality that IS, and away from the reality they WANT to believe, is.

Well, that isn't my day job, but I do attempt to weed through the garbage, and try to point people to where things happen to be.

This becomes difficult because so many people want to believe their alternate reality, so much, that pointing out the flaws in their logic by providing the actual facts either gets ignored, or I will be attacked personally.

I do not mind this, it is a hard and dirty job, but SOMEBODY has to do it.

Ciao, CZ

FACTS AND FICTION

Well, the interesting thing about fiction, or vision, is that - if it is a fiction that is wanted - with directed focus, it can become the new fact. One of my favorite quotes (do you have this one, Rob?)  is from Cervantes, who said, “Facts are the enemy of Truth.” The quote seems to be a conundrum at first, but upon closer introspection, the validity emerges: the deeper Truth can be obscured by an all-encompassing seduction by materially-based "factoids". Just as we need balance in both sides of the brain; both fact-based logic and science, as well as creativity-based vision, are needed for the dance of balance on the world stage.

And sometimes what is identified as fiction, is just a Future Truth, after all.

FROM A SISTA AWAKENER

Thanks Rob, great piece!

One of the ways that I consider myself to be an awakener is to gently open people’s consciousness concerning the insidious control that patriarchy has upon us, particularly through language. Words have power, and their subtleties have inversely more power, since they often enter into our consciousness, unnoticed.

For example, at expos and the like, you will often hear booth-minders, both men and women, say that they are “manning” the booth. But if we want to midwife the rebirth of the balance of the feminine, we might be better served to say that we are “staffing” the booth. And that is why I consider myself a “partner” in your community, rather than a “fellow.”

PS- Loved your graphic of the Elephant and the Wise Persons!

Feeling at a loss

I feel like I'm waiting for another shoe to drop. A plot complication for all of us. Events like 9/11, whatever you think about it, go to show that what was formerly "unthinkable" is not just thinkable, it's somebody's M.O.. And we have a President who is too quick to go to war, to fight, to take any situation as one that calls for a violent response. That's dangerous; it's already been deadly for too many Americans, Iraqis, and Afghans.

So what is it that I'm waiting for? Let me informally ask, what do you expect to see first -- a swell for impeachment, or an attack on Iran, or another terrorist attack on America, or a Ron Paul Revolution, or the Beijing Olympics, or a general strike on 9/11/08, or the 2008 U.S. presidential election? Or what? Another writer around here says that we're do for the emergence of news about UFOs and alien visitors.

It strikes me that at least two items above are due to happen BEFORE the U.S. presidential election. And that our decider-in-chief could take one of those events as the excuse and pretext for a martial law crackdown. At least, we have plenty of writers on this site who seem often to point in that direction, of more bad things happening.

How much would any of these events change the political situation before we even get to 2008's election day? Just musing aloud, as it were.

The Youth

We are awakening. And in large numbers. We were raised in factories like cattle. We were instructed by televisions and teachers who fed us lies all day. We ate the processed crap we were fed. Only the fortunate among us were ever taught how to truly think.

But then something happened and we began to awaken from our collective coma. Society did not like this and the sleepers did not understand what was going on. We, the youth of America, finally began to think for ourselves, as conscious and sentient individuals. We did not need others, whether it be the government, media, parents, or teachers to define who we are. We realized that the greatest truths in life can be experienced by looking within.

But where are these great masses of youth? Some are in the 911 Truth Movement, others have joined Ron Paul's campaign for the restoration of the Republic, and more have found that they do not need any campaign or movement to get behind and are influencing change in the world around them on a day to day basis. Simply by changing the way they think and interact with the world, these young people are changing the world in a dramatic, but often unseen, way.

And yet, I often feel like I am alone amongst my peers. I see too many putting their faith in false prophets, media-induced illusions, and the dead-end pleasures of our society that bring no long-term happiness. I am often guilty of these things myself. But I come here once in a while and I am trying. Most people posting on this site are at least twice my age. Even within this community, only a few seem to find value in what I am saying.

Has my young mind not seen enough of this world? Is it that the older folks have simply seen too much? Are there divisions within the ranks of the awakened? Am I asleep? Are you awake?

Regardless of the answers to those questions, I can see the awakened life in the eyes of children younger than myself. They are the real future. They give me optimism. I work so that they might be able to fully realize the dream that I often feel might already be lost for myself.

There is a storm coming. We need to reach more and more young people by any avenue possible. They are the strong ones that shall help us through. You are there for guidance and wisdom.

Waking without numbers...

I don't think age factors much to the awakening of our individual wisdsom and awareness - perhaps the young have a better chance as they have had less time to fall deep into slumber? Perhaps the old just moan louder! Age though is just another division that has no place here anymore than race, religious affiliation, politics or gender ...awakening is from within where there are no divisions.

That we awaken is the point - not who, how or when.

Rob's words and quotes are like nourishment for the soul... your response was a delight too.

Jack Kornfield - Y-E-S!!

"Those who are awake live in a state of constant amazement"

Sometimes the jaded adults around me consider me a child for the level of amazement that so easily comes my way.   I get excited over the simplest things - while those around me glory in airs of "been there - done that."

I'll now use a word I NEVER use as a writer - in my self-conscious presumption of dignity - FUCK THEM!!!  I choose my amazement over their disinterest any time, any day, any way!!

I'll just tell you this, Rob my friend...  You've given ME a gift on YOUR birthday - a reminder of Jack Kornfield's statement and a welcome invitation to stay amazed.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AWAKENER!!   MAY YOU FOREVER BE AMAZED!!!

AMAZING GRACE.

Look for forgiveness as you spread forgiveness throughout the planet.

Kall shall be happy upon his day. He has given happiness to all, but one

dog. To his mutt in waiting, I say he has actually given me hope.

Happiness is light, whereas hope is weighted with the strength to

alter the universe. Kall has unleashed Wolfie in order to be on the

prowl for licentious evildoers, while growling at liscivious dissemblers

of vile perfidy.

Woof to the Chief!
