BECKWATCH: "Be Prepared: An Introduction to Food Storage"
On November 21st, Glenn posted on his website a treatise on "Food Storage". The insinuation being that our food supply is not safe or the government is somehow going to take away our food or the government is going to do something drastic that will make our food supply unsafe or maybe, we just are not safe from our government.
Glenn is so absolutely without merit that he is now depending entirely on fear to keep what little viewership he has left. And, he is probably mentally ill and spiraling towards some type of collapse. The disturbing aspect of this is - where will that leave his devoted viewers and listeners?
He's already paved the way for his impending breakdown with the news of his various afflictions and maladies. So when he does go it will be because of blindness, etc. But what about the Fox viewers that aren't blind or crazy - they will simply be angrier, with no messiah or ready outlet. The awful tragedy here is that the vast majority of these folks are very good people with very legitimate cause to be afraid and angry. Glenn Becks and demagogues don't just happen - they are created by the external forces around them. Evidently there has been a tremendous void in our public conversation that needed filling and Fox News is filling it.
It used to be filled by "a life".
Many Americans are afraid of themselves. They don't like what they have bought into and are certainly not going to take responsibility for their choices: Obama did it or Citibank did it or a Muslim did it. America has become the excuse - as if it were an entity apart from us citizens. We are America, all of us. Apparently scores of Americans are afraid of the life we have made here in America. They want and need someone or something to validate their choices over the choices of other Americans - this is where Fox News comes in.
Glenn Beck and Fox are cultural Svengalis, validating bad choices and bad habits. Fox is naturally amoral, which is a huge problem when moral people are looking to them for answers. Fox knows that their viewers want "things" or want the "things" or fears they have to be validated. Fox is financed and empowered by corporations, groups and individuals that provide these "things". This is not unusual - so is every other "news organization". The tremendous difference is that the content of the other venues does not exist solely to validate the purchases, choices, etc. of its viewers. Fox sees America as a huge, hedonistic, convenience store, where no choice is foolish, no purchase too extravagant or destructive.
So, where does Glenn beck fit into all of this? Simple, he is the resident propagandist. He defines the differences between you and me and a Fox viewer. I may be stupid, I may be dangerous, I may be a Catholic, I may be a supporter of liberation theology, I may be black, I may be a progressive, I may be a Jew, I may be a Socialist, I may be educated, I may be a musician, I may be an artist - take your pick. A fox viewer can choose anyone of these and validate a bad choice simply because Glenn has pointed out that the "Progressive" is against that choice. However, after the laughter and derision and after the T.V. is turned off - the viewer is stuck with the bad choice.
