If Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signs SB 1070, there is a life wrecking misdemeanor waiting for American citizens who are caught running around free without their citizenship papers. Especially, if a cop stops an Arizonan on the auspice of immigration. Sherriff Arpaio can impound your car if the person riding with you doesn't have their citizenship papers and is suspected of being an illegal alien.
You still need to petition as an American to protect your freedom and your personal property while visiting in Arizona. If you are an Arizona taxpayer, you should put conditions or limits to criminalizing your identity, or lack thereof, if it could be you.
One could only speculate what this means if you are from out of state and you don't have your "papers". Can you be imprisoned on a misdemeanor in Arizona for not being able to identify yourself as a passenger without a license? If so, that is really going to put a squeeze on tourism dollars. Sorry, a trip to Sedona or Lake Havasu is not worth it if this bill is signed by Governor Brewer.
CONTACT GOVERNOR JAN BREWER DIRECTLY:
As a constituent [traveler, citizen of the United States], I am devastated to learn that the Arizona state legislature has approved the misguided anti-immigrant and anti-business SB1070 put forth by State Senator Russell Pearce.
I ask you to exercise your power as Governor to veto this measure immediately.
SB 1070 gives local law enforcement permission to enforce immigration laws, taking resources away from enforcement of local laws that protect American citizens. Furthermore, it is a gross violation of our civil liberties and a mandate for law enforcement to racially profile.
The law also promises to have a chilling affect on the economy, with unjustifiable raids on businesses and immigrants fleeing the state as a consequence of attrition through enforcement. One just needs to take a look at Prince Williams County to note the general devastation that occurs as a result of local law enforcement of immigration laws.
Let commonsense prevail. Let the federal government enforce the immigration laws as it was intended for them to do. Veto the measure and support real immigration reform for the state of Arizona.
