Here is one of the most important videos I've ever seen. James O'Brian speaks about asking "WHY?" as in "Why do you think that?"

I have long asked this question; it got my ass fired from a tenured teaching position, it is what I taught my elementary students for 25 years, and it strikes me as numero uno when listening to others.

The sad part is when they fold up their tent, say FU, and walk away. But speaks vastly more about them than my asking the question.

This from the video text: "James O'Brien is a writer and LBC radio presenter. He has written for the Times Literary Supplement and is a regular columnist for the Daily Mirror. He has presented BBC Two's Newsnight and his own daytime talk show O'Brien on ITV. His daily current affairs phone-in show on LBC has a million weekly listeners and his Unfiltered podcast has been downloaded three million times. How To Be Right is his first book. Recorded live at the Tabernacle in London's Notting Hill on 25th February 2019."

I most highly recommend this, and to those who walk away, the best I can say is either nothing or, if I'm feeling polite, "Goodbye," and have a good life in your case-hardened bubble-brain.

Very interesting presentation. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Daniel. I have to wonder if there's an institutional solution, or again, if it comes down to individual responsibility and finely-tuned discretion. The incentives are in the wrong direction, that's for sure. Truth doesn't sell ad time or push buttons the way spectacular and outrageous narratives do, whose resemblance to the truth is coincidental at best. That puts the burden on the viewer/listener/spectator. And that means having a discerning eye, keen incredulity, and tools which are not often readily available. What to do? One great bit of advice came out of it: turn the sh*t off! Which is why I haven't watched TV for 19 years now.

Absolutely spot on! All you have to do to see the truth of Mr. O'Brien's thesis is to watch one evening of CNN's shows. They all are focused on what the guests think...not why they think it. It inevitably degenerates into a shouting match with right-wingers shouting unquestioned false equivalences and alternative facts and the host never asking "Why do you believe that?"

It is a good video. but, Sometimes there are questions that define the inquisitor as clueless.

"have a good life in your case-hardened bubble-brain." is hardly polite but good advice for some.

There is always a way to constructively engage a clueless person. Maybe it's ultimately futile. But the process of attempting to do so, is good mental discipline and forces us to take our own belief systems out of the normal comfort zone, into the realms where our enemies function (or don't function). This in itself gives depth to our own arguments and allows us to bolster our own thinking.

If in the end we fail, we can always use this ...
