Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain
Now that President Obama has reconsidered and decided to take up the Syrian chemical attack issue with the Congress in a not so surprising reversal considering the British parliament snubbed Prime Minister David Cameron's plea to join Obama in a missile attack on Syrian government installations , the big question is will the Congress give him the authorization?
So let the "charade" games begin. Actually they've started over the weekend with Obama's Republican attack dogs Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham pushing hard for the Congress to grant the president the authority to attack Syria.
Throw in the likes of Secretary of State John Kerry (in full attack mode), Vice President Biden and other assorted administration flacks on the phones or giving a pitch on Sunday's corporate media "news" programs it's all but a full court press by the Obama mob to get the Congress to give him cover.
In an unusual twist the Repubs. are split between libertarian Kentucky Senator Rand Paul's "Tea Party" crowd mainly in the House who seethe at anything associated with Obama and putting on a 1930's isolationist face opposing any intervention in Syria against the Republican interventionists led by McCain and Graham with the "rift" between the sides providing a sideshow to the Syrian "issue" previously unseen by the usual Republican automatons who normally vote in lock step unison to everything their leadership ordered.
As for the weak kneed Democrats in both the House and the Senate there are few independently minded lawmakers who vote their conscience, retain their integrity like a Russ Feingold and a Robert Byrd willing to split with their party and defy a president, Democrat or Republican, when a wrongheaded misadventure is up for a vote.
Then let's not forget the impact of AIPAC (America Israel Public Affairs Committee) whose outsized influence over the overwhelming majority of Congressional Dems. and Repubs. is legendary. This Israeli lobby has most of their Congressional sycophants genuflecting like Catholics before the Pope and kissing AIPAC's "ring" i.e. the moolah they "Indirectly " provide to the election campaign war chests of the majority in Congress.
