The impeachment process, which includes the senate "trial", was indeed intended to reverse an election. That's the whole point! It was intended as a means to remove from office anyone demonstrating, after election, they're unfit for office. The founders, most of them anyway, wanted a legal process, a systemic remedy if a Napoleon, a Capone, Hitler, Nixon, Clinton or a Trump were to ever attain political power. Highly unethical and criminal people can attain power through many avenues including foreign interference, elitist rigging, force, trickery, fraud, corruption, or through a legitimate election. The voters, themselves, might even purposely elect a known criminal for whatever reasons.
And impeachment was put in place for that very scenario. The founders didn't want any mob boss, rapist, con-artist, wanna-be dictator or autocrat making a power grab through their misleading the public or even through the public's desire to have such a person in office.
But it takes an uncorrupted congress to make the impeachment process effective in protecting our country from such unwise voter approval, voter gullibility or candidate criminality.
On Wednesday, 1-22-20, referring to the senate impeachment trial, Trump told reporters from Davos, Switzerland - "But honestly, we have all the material. They don't have the material," he said. Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), one of the House impeachment managers assigned with presenting the case against Trump in the Senate, rightly accused him of clearly admitting to and boasting about committing an impeachable offense.
"The second article of impeachment was for obstruction of Congress: covering up witnesses and documents from the American people," former law-enforcement officer, Demings, wrote. "This morning the President not only confessed to it, he bragged about it: 'Honestly, we have all the material. They don't have the material.'"
Throughout the impeachment investigation, the Trump administration has refused ANY cooperation in the investigation; refused to produce any documents demanded by lawmakers and ORDERED former and current White House officials not to comply with congressional subpoenas. The Clinton administration, on the other hand, supplied Congress with nearly 100,000 pages worth of documents and allowed several witnesses to testify during Bill Clinton's impeachment trial.
"Trump, who obstructed Congress by withholding documents and witnesses, just told reporters in Davos that the House doesn't have the evidence, 'we' have all the evidence," Walter Shaub, former director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, responding to Trump's comments, wrote - "Given that one of the charges is obstruction, that's as brazenly corrupt and cynical as it gets."
Trump and his cohorts are also guilty of violating The Impoundment Control Act of 1974. This law REQUIRES the president to notify congress whenever congressionally approved funds are withheld from disbursement. And there's STILL roughly 35 million dollars of Ukrainian aid Trump has yet to release! And on January 16, 2020, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (U.S. GAO) came to the same conclusion. Just how many crimes is Trump allowed to commit while occupying the White House? or, throughout his life?
Trump has been allowed criminal unaccountability for the last 35 years and has brought unprecedented criminal unaccountability to the executive branch of the U.S. government. He's running a criminal cartel from the White House. And the trump cult and the GOP have clearly demonstrated their approval and enabling of and even participation in this criminal cartel.
