The President launched a plan on to protect the oceans, U.S. coasts and Great Lakes from the threats of climate change, pollution and overfishing. In a statement designating June 2009 as National Oceans Month, the President declared,”The oceans are critical to supporting life; the base of the oceanic ecosystem provides most of the oxygen we breathe, so oceans are critical to our survival." Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Enviromental Quality, will lead a task force that will design and recommend a national policy to protect and restore health to ocean, coastal and Great Lakes ecosystems and resources within 90 days. The President sent a letter to the United States Congress, promising he would take every legal and administrative remedy to keep sealed the detainee abuse photos. "I will continue to take every legal administrative remedy available to me to ensure the DoD detainee photographs are not released," the President wrote in a letter to Rep. David Obey, (D-Wis.), and Sen. Daniel Inouye, (D-Hawaii), the chairmen of the House and Senate appropriations committees. The President wrote, also, "Should a legislative remedy prove necessary" he will, at that time, support one. (source: afterdowningstreet.org)

Day144/June13th/Saturday: In his Weekly Address, the President explained how he will cover the upfront costs of reform by eliminating overpayments from Medicaid and Medicare and driving down costs contributing to government’s health care expenditures across the board. “I know some question whether we can afford to act this year, the President said, “But the unmistakable truth is that it would be irresponsible to not act. We can’t keep shifting a growing burden to future generations. With each passing year, health care costs consume a larger share of our nation’s spending, and contribute to yawning deficits that we cannot control. So let me be clear: health care reform is not part of the problem when it comes to our fiscal future, it is a fundamental part of the solution.” Transcript Video

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was on the Canadian side of Niagra Falls where she held a joint press conference with Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon. Clinton announced the Canadian and U.S. governments will update the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement to "preserve the needs of our shared ecosystem”.

Day145/June14th/Sunday: On this Flag Day, the President declared the upcoming week as National Flag Week.

Day146/June15th/Monday: the President traveled to Chicago, Illinois and, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, spoke about health care reform at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association. Among the President’s remarks:

“Make no mistake: The cost of our health care is a threat to our economy. It's an escalating burden on our families and businesses. It's a ticking time bomb for the federal budget. And it is unsustainable for the United States of America.”

“My view is that health care reform should be guided by a simple principle: Fix what's broken and build on what works. And that's what we intend to do.”

“But my signature on a bill is not enough. I need your help, doctors, because to most Americans you are the health care system. The fact is Americans (and I include myself and Michelle and our kids in this) we just do what you tell us to do. That's what we do. We listen to you, we trust you. And that's why I will listen to you and work with you to pursue reform that works for you.”

“We need to end the practice of denying coverage on the basis of preexisting conditions. The days of cherry-picking who to cover and who to deny, those days are over. I know you see it in your practices, and how incredibly painful and frustrating it is—you want to give somebody care and you find out that the insurance companies are wiggling out of paying.” Transcript Video

Upon his return to the White House, the President met with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the Oval Office, where they talked for over two hours. They discussed topics ranging from Guantanamo to the agenda for the July summit of the Group of Eight (G8) in L’Aquila, Italy. An agreement was reached for three Guantanamo detainees to be transferred to Italy.
