Day134/June3rd/Wednesday: The President was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he met with King Abdullah.
Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced nearly $18 million in funds that will assist Ohio’s workers affected by recent layoffs. Of that amount, $16 million represents newly authorized Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) funds to assist workers who have lost their jobs as a result of foreign trade. The remaining $1,657,746 is an increase modification to an existing grant to assist approximately 700 additional workers affected by layoffs at the Chrysler Twinsburg Stamping Plant.
The Obama Administration announced the federal government will offer $50 million in new housing vouchers to the approxiamate 3,300 households which continue to live in United States Department of Homeland Security trailers and mobile homes in Louisiana and Mississippi. Those households will, also, be given the option of buying their units for as little as one dollar if they meet safety standards and local zoning rules. Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman Clark Stevens explained the offers as an effort to "responsibly close out the agency's temporary housing mission."
Day135/June4th/Thursday: The President gave a speech titled “A New Beginning” at Cairo University in Cairo, Egypt. Among his remarks:
“I've come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect….”
“America is not—and never will be—at war with Islam. We will, however, relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to our security, because we reject the same thing that people of all faiths reject: the killing of innocent men, women, and children. And it is my first duty as President to protect the American people.”
“The enduring faith of over a billion people is so much bigger than the narrow hatred of a few. Islam is not part of the problem in combating violent extremism—it is an important part of promoting peace.”
“Unlike Afghanistan, Iraq was a war of choice that provoked strong differences in my country and around the world.”
“America will defend itself, respectful of the sovereignty of nations and the rule of law. And we will do so in partnership with Muslim communities which are also threatened. The sooner the extremists are isolated and unwelcome in Muslim communities, the sooner we will all be safer.”
“Tomorrow, I will visit Buchenwald, which was part of a network of camps where Jews were enslaved, tortured, shot and gassed to death by the Third Reich. Six million Jews were killed—more than the entire Jewish population of Israel today. Denying that fact is baseless, it is ignorant, and it is hateful.”
“Let there be no doubt: The situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable. And America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own.”
“Violence is a dead end. It is a sign neither of courage nor power to shoot rockets at sleeping children, or to blow up old women on a bus. That's not how moral authority is claimed; that's how it is surrendered.”
