According a 2015 study, sleep loss affects critical aspects of decision-making in high-stakes situations. The study simulated a situation where participants had to complete a task to test their decision-making while adapting to changing circumstances -- and participants who were sleep-deprived were more likely to make the wrong decisions than participants who had slept.
4. You have trouble with learning and memoryWhen you haven't slept, your ability to learn new information could drop by up to 40 percent, Matthew Walker, a Berkeley sleep researcher, told the National Institutes of Health.
Does this help explain why Trump seems to actually hate prepping for the presidential debates?
5. You might make less appropriate moral decisionsAnother study found that individuals took longer to decide how to respond to a personal moral dilemma when they were sleep-deprived compared to when they were well-rested.
A study of healthy adults found that getting less than five hours of sleep a night for seven nights in a row led the individuals to report feeling more stressed, angry, sad and mentally exhausted.
This subject deserves much more attention, but I want to encourage a discourse which focuses on how a leader with a bundle of serious disorders can use his deficit as a tool to control the uncritical masses of the poorly educated and wounded, to displace their anger onto the least protected, and to give them a simple message they can hold onto and which he himself can sustain. The bond between the authoritarian leader, with his mental disorders, and his supporters is both enabled, and in some way, supported by those disorders.
A man who cannot read a book due to his deficiencies of attention must rely on simple messages (such as the Hitler speeches) the persuasive power of those with deeper knowledge and superior intellect.
Thus, Trump has surrounded himself with master propagandists like Woolsey, Bannon, and Conway, to shape his message (newspeak for lie) and neo-cons who have both read and written books, against whom his empty intellect is defenseless. Trump has said he wants peace with Russia, yet takes on as advisors those urging war with Iran, which is a close military ally of Russia (and China). This shows how the mental disorder of AD/HD can lead to actions which are contradictory and dangerous.
His "peace initiative with Russia is betrayed by choosing advisors whose war policies would draw Russia into military conflict with the US. Can such contradictions be explained by the disorders associated with lack of focus, disorganized thinking, and mood swings associated with sleep deprivation?
Thus a leader with a personality disorder common among Tyrants has found a way to use his impairment to fashion a message that appeals to enough unsophisticated people to gain power..............matching their impairment with his own, in a way that has created a political landscape littered with lies, unexplored crises, and a media which floats from scandal to scandal without dealing with any of them.
Russian hacking, which brings forth the possibility that the US has had regime change without a shot fired becomes buried under a new barrage of crisis, with nothing resolved, nothing discussed, and democracy buried in the undertow. Today, the gutting of the Ethics Watchdog, tomorrow something new to distract us. Deflection (displacing anger) and distraction (cluttering the mind) both work to subvert the responsible media and informed citizenry that are required for democracy to work.
