12. Global Warming Is Not Dangerous: Warming has always been good for human beings, and it does not threaten plants and animals, because they can adapt to a changing climate, as they have in the past.
As Part I of this book has shown, continued global warming will be much more harmful for human beings than helpful, due to increasing heat waves, droughts, storms, sea-level rise, fresh water shortage, and food shortage. With regard to plants and animals, current climate change is much more rapid than change in the past, so the ways in which species adapted in the past are generally impossible.
Summary: Given the extent to which denialism has contributed to the media and political failures to deal meaningfully with climate change, it is remarkable how weak even the most popular denialist claims are. In light of this weakness, Ernest Moniz, in a statement about climate change shortly after becoming the new Energy Secretary, was wise to say: "I'm not here to debate what's not debatable."
