Arnie: This photo of a guide looking out over the landscape, binoculars to his eyes, was taken from the back seat of the jeep. Though many people mistake the hair for that of a woman, in fact it is a male guide. The bright red of his garment contrasts with the dull hue of the landscape over which he looks, and the modern watch on his wrist contrasts with the traditional bracelets he wears on the same arm.
Carol's poem "To Be a Good Bush Guide" elaborates on the incredible range of skills a guide needs. She wrote two poems about this, so you may want to include both.
Easy enough! Here are both poems.
To Be a Good Bush Guide
First you must own seamless people skills.
Call every client by name.
Have patience without seeming to need it--
while you identify Waterbuck
for the fifth time during the same game drive.
Maintain a sense of humor--
chuckle at stale jokes, tell fresh ones
seeming not to notice whose are funnier.
Serve picnics as if the queen had come to tea.
Exude confidence so everyone feels safe.
