Americans believe the line from Congress and Barack Obama that there’s only a little time left, the next president will deal with it and fix the problems, it will slow down business that needs to get done, it would divide us when we need to be united, there’s not enough time left in Congress to do it, we don’t have the votes, and on and on and on…
Americans definitely aren’t going to be pre-empting the Commission on Presidential Debates or the state governments that make it difficult more choices and more voices to be heard in presidential elections.
So, recap: Wall Street meltdowns, terrorists or brutal dictators, and crackpot candidates who could threaten their well-being deserve pre-emption while global warming, corporate crime, and recidivist criminal regimes that they live under are a-okay, not worth pre-empting.
You can only pre-empt things that keep the country united. If it divides us, forget it.
As George W. Bush spends the last few months of his rule over America, he can exercise his ego and arrogantly say, “I may be the worst president in the history of polling in America but I do have my name on a doctrine for a policy that the people genuinely accept.”
Yep, Bush might as well be the synonym for “pre-emption.” And as we continue to spiral out of control, you have to wonder, "What will the American people find themselves to be comfortable with pre-empting next?"
