The Global Peace Energy series of fiber art is based on a vision I saw during the first Worldwide Global Peace meditation held on Dec 31st, 1986, of the earth and its seven chakras. All the quilts in this series were cut from the same lengths of cloth, symbolizing our foundational connections. The earth is made from silk dupionni and Ultrasuede, appliqued on a black velvet background and surrounded by hundreds of Austrian crystal rhinestones. Other Global Peace Energy quilts in this series are in collections around the world including the University of Peace in Costa Rica, and a peace organization in Chile (these versions feature the Western Hemisphere.) One from the series is missing, last seen in New Jersey in the 1980s, presumed stolen.
The Ribbon International is a project founded by Justine Merritt (1924-2009) following a trip to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima, Japan in 1975. Merritt conceived the idea of wrapping the Pentagon with a mile of ribbon to remember, "that we love the earth and its people," the ribbon representing tying a string around one's finger to remember something. The Ribbon was made in sections by volunteers, each 36 by 18 inch panel used embroidery, quilting, painting or other techniques. The makers were invited to convey their thoughts and emotions in the panels, with their story on the back. In an event held on August 4, 1985, the 40th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 27,000 panels were connected in an 18-mile long strip stretching from the Pentagon into Washington D.C. The event was covered in the film The Ribbon Starts Here by Nigel Noble (1988).
