It may be that Clinton polls stronger among Democrats than among the general voting, or potential voting, population. Sanders' strategy involves getting groups to the polls that don't normally vote, much as Obama did in 2008. This includes minorities, young people, and the poor.
This brings up another issue. Democrats have gotten complacent because they've held the White House for nearly 8 years and because they have this almost mystical belief that things will go their way because the demographics support them, or will eventually (if all those pesky right-wing white males would just die off already).
It's not happening.
As this map from Vox's article "Democrats are in denial. Their party is actually in deep trouble" shows, Democrats are losing everywhere but the "Left" coasts (and even New York has a Republican dominated legislature). The map shows the Pre-2012 election breakdown, but after that election, the Democrats lost control of Nevada and partial control in several swing states too. State-wise, the country is almost entirely red now except in the northeast where it's increasingly blended.
