These are among the more forgiving passages in the Bible on the subject of divorce. A look at Barack Obama and Joe Bidden will find a far more respectable adherence to "family values," as carried out in works (instead of in speeches to get elected).
Obama is married to his sweetheart from just out of college and Joe Biden lost his first wife in a car accident and has been married to his current wife for over 30 years. He remembers his first wife by not working on December 18th, the date she and his infant daughter were killed.
Try telling that to James Dobson. For Dobson and the other Republican operatives in pastors' clothing, their interpretation of the Bible is all about politics, as it is with Gov. Palin.
Liberals, like Eli Pariser and others, will find a way to package the Biblical argument against McCain and Palin into commercial spots because it is devastating, as focus groups are discovering. MSNBC's Keith Olbermann will find a way to adapt a Biblical argument against Palin and McCain in his cable program. They will find a way to make "Divorce and Parental Neglect '08" the slogan for the Republican ticket.
When that begins to happen, honorable Senator Obama, do not seek to restrain Americans from holding Republicans to the same ethical standards to which they seek to hold us.
Do not lend your voice on this issue, and if you do, admit that you can only hope we follow your standards but that there are many of us who have been legitimately hurt by the right wing; many of us who are hurting now.
Admit that there are plenty of reasons for the victims of a decades-long assault on Northeast and West Coast Americans (as they are referred to sneeringly by the right wing), lesbians and gays, men and women who have aborted their children to lash back.
This election is not all about you, Senator Obama. This election is about defeating crooked Republicans who have tarnished the reputation of their own party by exploiting the Bible and people of true faith. In doing so, mark you well, it is our absolute God-given and Constitutionally-affirmed right to hold Republicans to the same standards to which they attempt to hold us.
Give us respect by not working against us. We are defending ourselves from an epic ideological attack.
