A recent (April 2018) forsa opinion poll about German attitudes toward Russia, for example, taken right after the Skripal incident, which has since become ever more problematic (to say the least), even though 46% of Germans believed "Russia was responsible" (not surprising given the media coverage at the time), only 23% approved of the subsequent expulsion of Russian diplomats as a reaction to it.
55% thought the sanctions against Russia should be "gradually removed, 57% considered Russia a "reliable supplier of natural gas," 59% supported building a second gas pipeline from Russia (Nord Stream 2), 50% held the "US responsible for current East-West tensions" (25% held Russia responsible), 17% were "afraid of Russia or Russians," 79% considered Trump a "greater threat to world peace than Putin" (13%), 63% thought the EU should do "everything possible to make Russia feel like part of Europe," 94% considered "German relations with Russia important" although only 19% thought these relations were "good" at the moment, and 89% thought "European states should have an independent foreign policy that takes Russian interests into account," as opposed to having "the strongest possible relation to the West and the USA and a clear distance from Russia" (6%).
Those figures sum up the "German" attitude toward both the US and Russia better than anything you hear or read in the MSM.
