Hybrid democracy in Pakistan is not delivering

In the absence of genuine democracy, anarchy and tyranny will remain part and parcel of politics in Pakistan. As long as the practice of free and fair elections to determine who holds power remains a distant dream. And the state persists in impeding free expression of opinion, independent media, impartial execution of election law, and universal adult franchise.

We know that building grassroots and law-governed democracy can take generations. It is a challenging task made even harder by unending attempts to undermine democratic institutions. But as history has shown, the people of Pakistan will continue to end up poorer and less free without genuine democracy.
