You might think: "Why would one even try to coordinate progressives? Trying to coordinate progressives is like trying to herd cats. Progressives are unwilling to follow the commands of a leader, and it's undesirable to try to force them to do so."
Yes, bottom-up initiative and a diversity of views and voices are valuable. But progressives will be fighting with one hand tied behind their collective back if they don't take advantage of the opportunity to build a coordinated progressive movement. Progressives need both bottom-up initiative and top-down corrdination.
How odd it would be if progressives -- who, after all, believe in the value of centralized, government-run initiatives and who oppose laissez-faire capitalism -- are unable themselves to work together for their common good and for the good of the world!
Of course, to some extent, progressive groups already work together. But my impression is that their coordination is weak. So far progressives haven't been able to end the wars, hold Bush et.al. accountable, or get real health care reform. Even if we hold marches, the news media often ignore us.
See this article for some further thoughts about progressive coordination.
OpEdNews can play a role in strengthening progressive media and, possibly, in coordinating its activities. But can OpEdNews coordinate with groups and sites like PDA, MoveOn, DFA, World Can't Wait, NARAL, Sierra Club, Huff Post, AlterNet, and others too numerous to name here?
