Extra, Extra, Read All About it: Bloomberg Quits GOP! Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, a former lifelong Democrat, who bolted the party to run in New York as a republican, has dumped the GOP, to enter the ranks of an Independent, in a possible Presidential Run as Third Party Candidate. Bloomberg Dumps Republicans! Mayor Michael Bloomberg broke the news this evening that tonight that he is firing the Republican Party to become an independent. In California, he told an audience of Google employees that America is "really in trouble" and slammed the wimpy behavior of its leadership in DC. Intimating that is not the way he ran New York City. Independence, honesty, common sense, innovation, teamwork and accountability, Mayor Bloomberg told his audience, are the cornerstones of nonpartisan leadership. He spoke of how he had used those cornerstones to solve problems in health care crime prevention and education, as Mayor of New York. Mayor Bloomberg assured his audience that neither the Republican nor Democratic parties could lay claim to so much as one of his initiatives. "They were built on the values of nonpartisan leadership, and they paid off," He said. "We have achieved real progress by overcoming the partisanship that too often puts narrow interests above the common good. As a political independent, I will continue to work with those in all political parties to find common ground, to put partisanship aside and to achieve real solutions to the challenges we face," he said. "Any successful elected executive knows that real results are more important than partisan battles and that good ideas should take precedence over rigid adherence to any particular political ideology. Working together, there s no limit to what we can do.'' Then he broke the blockbuster news, while in California making political speeches. "I have filed papers with the New York City Board of Elections to change my status as a voter and register as unaffiliated with any political party." "Although my plans for the future haven't changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city." Mr. Bloomberg attacked full on the partisan deadlock in Washington. He certainly is giving signals that he may be running as Third Party candidate for president. It is more likely, however, in this writers opinion, that knowing the chances of victory are slim in a Third Party status, he is hoping that one or another of the Two parties will see him as Vice Presidential timber. He certainly would enhance the chances of a Democratic Presidential candidate. Before running for mayor in 2001, he changed parties, from Democrat to Republican and won handily. Mayors in New York City are limited to two terms he mayor, so he is out of a job soon. However, he denies that he will run for president, but not very stridently. The Mayor's trip to California was timed perfectly to coincide with his cover picture on Time Magazine with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, who married into the Kennedy family fringes, and drew solid Democratic support when he ran for governor. Many experts believe that if he runs as a third-party candidate it would be the Democrats who would be the losers, as he would draw more votes away from the Democrats than from Republicans. Mr. Bloomberg, a lifelong Democrat, before his first party change to Republican, as well as his record of drawing Democratic votes in Mayoral elections, presents a serious threat to the Democrats election hopes. That is why I believe the Democrats, if they do not offer him the VP slot, will be acting as stupidly as they did in 2000 and 2004. More than that, many Democrats appear to be bolting the party, because of Nancy Pelosi, who not only refuses to consider Impeachment, many believe is acting under orders from Rahm Emanuel. That has angered them, Rahm Emanuel who is throwing away the Democratic vote by the bushel basket's full, has Dems livid with anger. The Dems handling of the war funding and their rejection of impeachment, and other key issues, has chased large segments of voters seeking a solid independent candidate who is not Ralph Nader, who would get America out of Iraq and Impeach the President and Vice president. Democratic voters feel betrayed by the lack of action from the Democrats and their support of the expansion of the war, in what amounts to thumbing their noses at winners who are not rocking-an-rolling for peace. Mayor Bloomberg announced his decision while making speech after speech throughout California, seeming to simulate a campaign-he sounded every bit a political candidate, saying, "When you go to Washington these days, you can feel a sense of fear in the air, the fear to do anything or say anything that might affect the polls or give the other side the advantage or offend a special interest group. The federal government isn't out front - it's cowering in the back of the room.'' Should he decide to run, his own enormous, personal fortune would easily tide him over the rough campaign trail and terrible costs, having spent more than, $150,000,000 on his two runs for Mayor in New York. Mr. Bloomberg leads the league of New York mayors running for president, in this writer's opinion Mr. Giuliani carries far too much baggage. The city did at least and probably betters under his direction than under Giuliani's. Moreover, he carries none of the Giuliani shortcomings, of family image, Gay rights, gun control, and/or abortion support. The Mayor positioned himself as a problem solver who could undo the Gordian Knot of Washington politics sounding a great deal like Jimmy Carter back in his winning campaign as an outsider, to Washington Politics. He pointed out that in his tenure in New York city hall was non-partisan. The Dems should be worried.
