It is no secret at The American Liberalism Project; we are waiting for Gore to announce. Meanwhile, of course, we are wondering if he will consider the odds of being swiftboated to death and decline. That thought brings up the question of whether any of the others are unworthy of our support. It has seemed to us that Democrats enjoy an embarrassment of riches. Virtually all of the candidates are bright, earnest, accomplished, and savvy people, even those with slender experience and especially those with wide experience in executive and legislative roles. It has always been, for us, a question of which to choose as the VP runningmate. I had eliminated one or two before reading this article in Mother Jones, and now I have eliminated another. We want a President (and Vice President) who understands the Judeo-Christian origins of western civilization and particularly the decision made over two hundred years ago to devise a nation where politics and piety were separate concerns. We have had enough of born-again narrow-mindedness and intolerance. We have had enough of people who look beyond the Constitution for answers to political questions. In fact, we have way too many people who do not understand the theory undergirding our Constitution. It turns out, it seems, that Hillary Clinton is another of these theocrats whose allegiance is to theology over polity, to mythos over the people she would be asked to serve. It is a simple thing now. Hillary is out! She cannot be a national candidate for anything. JB
