Let's take a look at some recent developments vis-a-vis the US and Russia particularly in light of Secretary of State John Kerry and a State Department delegation traveling this past Tuesday to Sochi, Russia and meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin for 4 hours.
Of significance was Kerry saying, "The Minsk 2 agreement (M2A) was the only way forward and that he would strongly caution Poroshenko against the idea of renewing military operations"[1] in eastern Ukraine.
That's the agreement brokered in February by Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande which we know did not include the US.
Now here's Kerry trumpeting M2A and warning the US backed Poroshenko to put a leash on his neo-Nazi, Right Sector ultranationalists that are itching to break the cease fire and resume the attack on the ethnic, Russian speaking Ukrainian's in the east.
So despite US and NATO Supreme Commander Philip Breedlove's seeming desire to escalate the conflict in Ukraine-wanting more troops and heavier fire power sent to the Poroshenko regime-something must have prompted President Obama to send Kerry and his State Department delegation, including Victoria Nuland, the primary suspect behind the February, 2013 coup in Kiev-who reportedly looked "unhappy and refused to talk to the press"[2] after the meeting with Putin was concluded.
Kerry's meeting with Putin came three days after the US and its European lackeys snubbed Moscow's invitation to attend the 70th Anniversary of Victory Day over Hitler's Nazi Germany. Yet in his speech Putin remarked, "We are grateful to the peoples of Great Britain, France and the United States of America for their contribution in the victory". [3] Certainly no snub there on Putin's part.
Meanwhile here in the US, the headline in the "US News and World Report" read, "Putin, in a swipe at the US, decries 'unipolar world at Victory Day parade". And if one read no further, his speech could be taken as simply a denunciation of the US. Read the speech, it was nothing of the sort.
But beyond thecorporate media's distortion of Putin, what is going on here?
Many questions arise:
Was Kerry's meeting with Putin the beginning of a turn of events, dampening the new cold war fervor and the start of a new era of cooperation with Putin and Russia?
And if Nuland-a spear carrier of neo-con ideology- "looked unhappy" after the meeting with Putin maybe it was a hint Obama was now rejecting the neo-cons? That he realized Nuland's role behind the coup in Kiev had created the Ukraine crisis and he concluded he needed Putin's cooperation?
Or was this just a US feint, an olive branch to Putin at this time because Obama needs the Russian's and the Chinese cooperation to help persuade Iran agree to sign a final deal on its nuclear program next month?
Also in the past year and a half-with Putin recognizing the machinations of the US behind the coup in KIev- he and China have established enormous economic and military ties that had to gain the attention of Obama and the Pentagon. These two nuclear powers will not be bullied and are the only deterrent to US hegemony over the world. They're also the primary deterrent against the US provoking a wider war which could be nuclear.
Lastly, there's Obama's legacy and the one and a half years he has left in his presidency. It certainly can't be saved domestically.
Only as a diplomatic, international peacemaker can his legacy be saved. In that light maybe something positive began in Sochi last Tuesday.
