I am a liberal only in the original sense of the word, which actually would mean I am a libertarion.
I am not a religious man but I believe God helps those who help themselves and governments should follow his example. Government has grown far too much to ever be sustainable, government handout programs cost far too much for the benefits received, and the government is far too involved in our daily lives. As a country we have strayed entirely too far from our sense of freedom, individualism and self-reliance. Making someone work for what they have does them far more good than giving them free money, give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime. You gain no self-respect standing in line waiting for government cheese. Get rid of welfare and go back to something like the Public Works Administration where taxpayers actually received a benefit from helping those who couldn't find a job, get rid of the union contracts that prevent us from doing that.
I have never crossed a picket line but I believe unions in general are asking for far more benefits than they are providing to the companies. The sense of entitlement we have astounds me. People don't realize that in order to pay you $10 an hour companies are actually spending $15-$16 an hour because of unemployment insurance, workers' compensation, vacation time, holiday pay and all the other requirements/benefits they are required to pay. Is your position making the company that much money or would they be better off shipping the jobs overseas? Union workers demand the higher wages but have no problem buying foreign crap so they don't have to spend the money it costs to buy products made in America by union employees.
How can modern day liberals actually say they are liberals? Here are some of the definitions of the word from dictionary.com
- favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.
- favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.
- of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies.
- free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.
- open-minded or tolerant, especially free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.
- characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.
- given freely or abundantly; generous: a liberal donation.
- not strict or rigorous; free; not literal: a liberal interpretation of a rule.
Read any liberal blog that mentions the Tea Party and see how "open-minded" and "free from prejudice or bigotry" the liberals are. Bring up the topic of gun-control and see how "favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible" they are. Mention prayer in school and see how far they go "favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression".
The writings I see demonstrate that many liberals are at least as close-minded, hypocritical and prejudiced in there thinking as those on the extreme right.
Minimize government, return to the days when competition was a good thing, rely on yourselves and your fellow citizens instead of the government, embrace freedom for what it is, both good and bad, most of all don't be a hypocrite.
