A Christian Fundamentalist preacher has been accused of using a male prostitute and buying drugs from said prostitute for the past three years. He has admitted that at least some of the allegations are true.
It seems this falls into a familiar pattern. I don't care if you are talking about Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggert, Bob Barr with his golden shower fetish, Mark Foley and the page scandal, or now Ted Haggert, a lot of these conservatives seem to be hyper sexual and kinky as hell. (Methamphetamines before sex? YOWZA. I feel so suburban)
You'll have to pardon me, but I keep giggling every time I see or hear this new story. I suppose I should have some sympathy. It could be that people like Haggert became like they did because they thought they were struggling self perceived demons. Perhaps they have some pain and guilt over this, and try to assuage it with their fight against issues such as gay marriage.
But I ain't that nice and they made a conscious choice to follow this path of vitriol. They are deliberate obscene purveyors of hate. It seems that either they want to make their self loathing into law or they cynically do what they do for power and profit. Maybe it's a bit of both. Ted Haggart, who has millions of followers hanging on his words, and has become quite wealthy, is huge on spreading viciousness regarding homosexuals. Most of whom want nothing more than to live just like everybody else in terms of making a better life for themselves and the ones they love. But people like Haggart evidently would tell us that it's only O.K. if they pretend they aren't gay at all. The message would seem to be that If they get married and have kids, they can have a little secret boy toy on the side. Mainly I am heartily sick of this holier than thou attitude that so many of the Religious Right seem to have of having the right to tell other people how they should live.
I wouldn't tell you that the Left Wing doesn't do some of that too. Patently, they do. But it's generally just not as intrusive and personal and, to be frank, filthy minded. Not because it's about sex, gay or otherwise, but the way they have of trying to make people feel like it's something to be ashamed of, that somehow, they are evil.
Oh yeah, this fall from grace, (pun intended), is a real hoot.
So as I keep laughing about nasty little hypocritical idiots such as these, I am reminded of a quote from the movie Beetlejuice, where the title character says, "I've seen the Exorcist 167 times, and it JUST KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERYTIME I SEE IT" Now if only someone would come out and accuse some big time conservative TV news network personality of sexual harassment and attempted phone sex while using, errr, a toy. But no, it could never could get that funny, could it.
