Bill Richardson For President: He Should Schedule All His Campaign Events With Joe Biden

You don't get to be President of the United States by being the most experienced or having the best resume. I recall recently a candidate who, as president, had won a war, developed a huge international coalition, had eight years experience as Vice President, had been Director of Central Intelligence and Ambassador to China.

He got knocked off by a guy from Arkansas.

So, for what it is worth, I think Bill Richardson, the Democratic governor of New Mexico, would make a great president. He negotiated with the North Koreans, headed the Department of Energy and served in the congress. Moreover, he has some south of the border blood in him which makes him empathetic to one of our fasted growing segments of the society. He is a straight shooter, he doesn't sound pompous but wise, and he looks like he sure enjoys a good meal.

The last president who enjoyed a good meal did OK and even now after heart surgery he's OK. Vice President Cheney has had too many heart procedures to recount but he looks angry all the time like he ate his last New York strip steak about the time the Mexicans overran the Alamo.

And he also shot a lawyer in the face: a black mark Richardson doesn't have.

Richardson said yesterday that Democratic presidential candidates should avoid tearing each other down (just as two of his rivals who are ahead of him in the polls started an ugly exchange of words).

Richardson spoke at an event hosted by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union. I listened with great interest on National Public Radio and thought Richardson's talk was masterful. He sounds like a healer which may be one of the things we need in America the most.

Senator Joe Biden also spoke and, excuse me, but he never sounds wise to me and does come across as pompous. This is the second time I've heard Senator Biden recently and he seems to have developed something of a motto that he uses to end his talks: "No Margin of Error." Biden says the next president will have "no margin for error."

The first time I heard this I giggled a little because the good Senator, on the day he announced his presidential bid, was quoted as calling Senator Obama "clean." He also disparaged the talents and experiences of all of his rivals. This comes on the heels of a televised news interview in Delaware (and everywhere) last summer that had Senator Biden seemingly saying immigrant Indians in his home state were only good for working at the 7-11.

I guess Senator Biden has taken the pledge and the REST of his days will be error free.

So if you have an opportunity to see or hear the replay of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union event yesterday in Colorado you are in for a real treat. Richardson at his best and Biden just being Biden. The contrast is startling!
