Since preparations began 4 months ago, there has been an exponential increase in the amount of coverage given to energy issues. The public is beginning to hear the phrase 'peak oil.' A keynote speaker is Jan Lundberg, former editor of the 'Lundberg Report', one of the most well known oil industry publications. He will discuss the factual basis of the 'peak oil' thesis, and what should be done about it.
This year is also the 10th anniversary of Ken Saro-Wiwa's execution in Nigeria, in the context of an environmental struggle against Shell Oil. His son, Ken Wiwa, will kick off 'The Price of Oil' Tour at this conference.
Antonia Juhasz, a fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies, will present information about Iraq's oil fields and how the figure in the planning and execution of the Iraq War.
This conference is an opportunity to Philadelphians to hear the 'back story' on rising gasoline and crude oil prices. Community and faith leaders will be meeting concurrently to propose bold new approaches applicable to Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.
