Per the Humane Society of the US -- NESTLE WILL OVERHAUL FARM ANIMAL
TREATMENT ACROSS THE GLOBE.
Today was a bad day for me personally, but it is ending on a supremely
happy note. Maybe you too have been praying every day that the CAFOs from hell would be dismantled. If so, I know that you share in the happiness of the HSUS and
the other animal rights groups who have been working so hard to see this day coming
closer to a reality.
Imagine -the world's largest food company is saying that cruelty on factory
farms has to go. Today they announced that they will eliminate many currently held
standard practices within its worldwide food supply chain.
Re this -the HSUS wrote: "....Nestle's new program will cleanse its
supply chain of the following practices: confinement of sows in gestation crates, calves in
veal crates and egg-laying chickens in cages; the forced rapid growth of chickens used
for meat products; and the harsh cutting of the horns, tails and genitals of farm
animals without painkillers."
HSUS further noted that because of these reforms, their announcement marks
the most comprehensive animal welfare program by a global food retailer to date.
This is a movement away from the intensive confinement of animals on
factory farms. Nestle is also encouraging food sustainability by promoting global Meatless
Mondays whose message will appear on Lean Cuisine products.
Nestle adopted these new measures after dialogue with animal protection
organizations which included The HSUS, Mercy for Animals, and World Animal Protection.
God bless these organizations for their wonderful work in this most needed concern for
animal welfare. And may He also bless the corporate heads at Nestle who are doing something
that speaks of caring and compassion. Hopefully, their good example will be followed
by other food producers.
I know that the animal welfare groups will not stop advocating for the
humane treatment of farm animals until all of them are freed from the cruel confining cages,
crates, and factory farms. And thank you Nestle for hopefully leading the way.
