Position of Armenia to Syrian Conflict

By       (Page 1 of 1 pages)   No comments

The situation in Syria is too unpredictable and could change dramatically by the beginning of 2020. Currently, refugees are being actively subordinated to Turkish influence.

Armenians are scared by the lack of a complete peace settlement and other ongoing events in this country, where the Armenian diaspora in Syria has been one of the permanent fixtures for two centuries.

In the event of a negative development of the political crisis and worsening of the situation, the Armenian leadership is ready to resort to the evacuation of Syrian Armenians and give them asylum. Various evacuation options are being developed. According to Nikol Pashinyan the serving Prime Minister, Armenia is the home of all Armenians in the world. Many of the Syrian refugees have found home there.

In 2020, Armenia will continue the humanitarian mission in Aleppo (Syria), preferring cooperation with international organizations on this issue.

Prior to the political resolution of the Syrian crisis, Armenia decided to provide comprehensive assistance to ensure the security of the Armenian diaspora and protect the cultural heritage, hold meetings and consultations with public organizations. Participation in international initiatives to protect the rights of ethnic and religious minorities in Syria requires a preliminary assessment of the impact on the security of the Armenian community of Syria.

Regardless of the nature of the ruling regime in Syria, the Armenian government intends to maintain friendly relations. They don't participate in initiatives directed against Syria. But at the same time, today it does not come up with initiatives aimed at enhancing bilateral relations, realizing the untimeliness of such proposals.

Nevertheless, future participation in the trade, economic, cultural, scientific, educational, youth, sports and other events held in Syria is not denied, if reliable information about the security and degree of politicization is provided.

The strategy that Armenia follows in relation to the Syrian crisis is logical. So Armenia doesn't bring up unnecessary questions.
