How Are You Mancipated?

Are you mancipated? That's how I started this article title. But then I changed it to 'How are you mancipated?'

Now, you may be thinking that I mean Emancipated. But no. I mean to use the word mancipated, without the E, the word which shows up as a misspelling in my spell checker and which is not translatable by google or Microsoft translation apps.

I think you ARE mancipated. But for you to understand what I mean, you'll need to understand the word. So, here's how I got to it.

I was browsing through one of the hundreds of antiquarian books I've acquired over the years. In this case, a 1768 third edition of one of the first English Language dictionaries-- The Johnson Dictionary.

It can be entertaining and enlightening to look up the way words were defined 252 years ago. For example, the definition of electricity is "an interesting property of amber."

I decided to look up the word slave. Here's what came up.

Note that back then, the letter S was printed to look like an F. So the definition of slave is: "One mancipated to a master; not a freeman; a dependant.

The word manicipated caught my attention. It was a word I didn't recognize. So I looked it up in the same dictionary and here's what came up:

Definition of mancipate from 1768 3rd edition Johnson Dictionary

  Details   DMCA

the definition of the verb "mancipate" is: To enslave; to bind; to tie.

The definition of 'mancipation' is: Slavery, involuntary obligation.

That got me thinking about how today, in this world, we are bound to and tied to so many different elements of our culture. We are 'mancipated' to a world where almost all of us are dependent upon major corporations to get food, to keep the lights on, to warm our homes, to clothe and feed ourselves. We are mancipated to the media to keep us aware of what is going on. We are mancipated to employers so we can afford access to healthcare. We are mancipated to employers so we can secure the resources to eat, have shelter, clothing, heat, etc.

Now this little exercise in language and words started with my search for amusement in a quarter millennia old book. I wanted to see how archaic ideas translate in modern day. Instead, Samuel Johnson's dictionary led me to think about an old, not longer used idea in a new way.

You sold me. $168, such a deal. I'll send a check.

I want to know how a word that meant enslaved, a word that had probably been legally very meaningful can get totally forgotten? When Google doesn't know a word... it's knocked out of the park!

Mancipation. It must have carried a ton of heaviness and shame. That it's opposite Emancipation, is so well know, that makes it's being lost more remarkable. The effort needed for society to forget this word, has been big. It must have been the more commonly understood word and then it's radical opposite emancipation, crept subversively into societies conversation.

How do you find time to look at old dictionaries? (The new text editor is awesome.)

I don't think it takes any real effort to drop a longer, Latin-based word from the standard vocabulary when a simpler synonym is already in use. But emancipation doesn't have a synonym, and the synonym for emancipate is free, which has additional meanings.

It seems to me that the modern dependencies you used as examples of our "mancipation" are qualitatively different from slavery. Perhaps with the current US healthcare arrangement you are bound to a specific provider (as a Canadian, I'm not sure how the US system works now), but you're not subject to their command. And you can certainly shop around for most goods and services -- an option not available to a slave.

Yes, "the many ways we've become mancipated?". Our 'Two Party Duopoly', Donkeys vs Elephants, for one, and our 'political power' remains 'in the hands of a few', and two, our 'privately owned central banking system', the Federal Reserve, and our 'sovereign' financial potency remains 'in the hands of a few', as well. This 'domination' of the nation has been going on for 'more than a hundred years' making 'our chances' for 'emancipation', even 'a little', quite remote indeed.

We are slaves to our left brains, which do not actually allow us to see what is right in front of us. Our left brains describe what is in front of our eyes, and tells our brains what to see. In my art classes, the main skill for my students to learn is to turn off the left brain, so they can actually draw what they see. (You have to be able to see what you see before you can draw what you see! Drawing what you think you see does not work, as evidenced by many who have attempted drawing and given up.)

The left brain is the dominant side of the brain in a patriarchal society. (And this is even true of raving feminists!)

With the exception of those who were apprenticed, or went to a Waldorf or Montessori or similar school, we all grew up under the patriarchally designed education model, which is is left-brain dominant to the point that the attributes of the right brain: creativity, intuition, color, music shapes, etc are considered much less important than the left brain attributes of analysis, identification, words, descriptions, etc. The left brain wants to dominate, and make the right brain invisible, therefore the arts are often the first thing to be removed from a school system.

However, having a balanced right/left brain allows us to engage in better logic and to see a whole picture.

My favorite example is to show my students the FedEx logo. If you have not noticed that there is an arrow in the logo, then you are left brain dominant. Many people are able to find the arrow after being told that one is there, but many cannot. Everyone can see it after it has been shown to them. The point is, how many years have you looked at that arrow, before you saw it? How many other things do we look at, but do not really see?

The role of the educator whether a schoolteacher, or someone who educates by lecturing, or writing opeds, is to illuminate the truth that is in front of others' eyes in a way that they can truly see that truth without the filter of the liar, liar pants-on-fire left brain.

The love of Statist power of the Democrats and the Establishment Republicans is enslavement to the state. Wilson began this, expanded greatly by FDR, LBJ, Nixon, Carter, and finally Obama.

I don't see any here who don't embrace further expansion of Statist enslavement that candidates like Bernie, Warren, and even falsely labeled "moderates" like Biden and Buttigieg advocate.

Our probably biggest "mancipation" is to this "Matrix" we're all stuck in. I'm watching that film for perhaps the 10th time (I remember the reviewer for "Newsweek" saying he'd already seen it 11 times soon after it first came out"..). It's possibly the best popular rendering of the very basic Eastern concept of Maya, "illusion". The Indian sages discovered long ago that what we call "reality" is anything but: it's temporary, always changing and above all very limiting, i.e. to the body which is prone to suffering, to the ego (which is prone to all kinds of nonsense), to something we laughably call "the mind", to the emotions (mostly negative for most of us), etc. The idea of the "game" is to release ourselves from this illusion and re-unite with out eternal, unlimited Selves. I'd call that being major "mancipation"" btw: I don't see anyway to correct spelling with the new text editor. Am I missing something?
