On January 20, Chief Justice John Roberts administered Obama's official oath of office. At midday, it was done quietly. It took two minutes in the White House Blue Room.
On January 21, public theater followed. Pomp and circumstance continued ad nauseam.
Ceremonial excess included patriotic music, bells pealing, the traditional post-inaugural parade and ball, parties, and candlelight celebrations throughout the evening.
Flags adorned Washington buildings, banks, commercial establishments, hotels, metal barriers, concrete ones, and a presidential reviewing stand.

Obama repeated Sunday's oath. He promised "to the best of (his) ability, to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
