Slavery ensured the "social and historical" progress of whites in the US. This social "progress" enabled white citizens to proclaim freedom as their rightful state of existence while denying the freedom of others. Black humanity, relegated to "hands," the better to control and exploit, ultimately reclaim their humanity.
Some Americans have been angry about this development ever since!
