Hundreds of government employees involved in cancer research have been terminated, which means laboratories have been shut down, laboratories in buildings on campuses that, for the most part, will sit empty with barely a staff to maintain the work. Looking into the funds to sustain the National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Mahler found that funds are being reduced to 4.5 billion from 7.2 billion. In Washington D.C., besides the National Guard and ICE searching high and low for criminals and immigrants, theres a very different attitude toward American science, writes Mahler.

First off, this isnt Germany, Vienna, or South Africa. And the attitude that is different is one of cruelty. Its not that cruelty has been a way to remove Indigenous people so newly arrived white Europeans can replace them. Its not that white Europeans, initially, invaders, employed cruelty to extract human beings from their homeland to be exploited by these new immigrants in the New World. What is enslavement if not an extreme form of cruelty?

Right wing American politics, I would suggest, is a label for the movement of money from, say cancer research, to the corporate billionaires! In other words, its a movement for the benefit of the corporate world. Its that corporate world that matters! As Mahler writes, this attack on biomedical research has been deliberate. Its also deliberate to place the anti-vaccine Kennedy at the head of the NIH For Kennedy, Mahler explains, the NIH is filled with corruption.

The NIH is filled with corruption! Doctors and scientists dont know as much as Kennedy does!

Michael Lauer, before he retired in February, was a deputy director of the NIH He told Mahler what what is happening is an absolutely unmitigated disaster that will take decades to recover from this if we ever do. It was Nixon who signed the National Cancer Act into law, committing 1.5 billion12 billion in todays dollarsover the next three years to fight cancer.

This was the beginning of the War on Cancer. Hes the same Nixon who gave us the EPA. Also being dismantled by the Trump regime.

Scientists, Mahler writes, accumulated invaluable knowledge about the molecular biology of cancer to begin to yield transformative treatment in the form of targeted therapies designed to attack specific types of cancer. Biomedical research has yielded progress!

In addition to studying molecular biomedical cancer, there have been discoveries benefiting other diseases. For example, Americans suffering from HIV or Hepatitis C, have benefited from cancer research. The COVID vaccine has benefited from technologies that had been developed for cancer, Mahler explains, enabling scientists to quickly sequence the virus and then develop a vaccine for it.
